Random door locking/alarm/backup mirror issues

Hello, I have a 2000 328i that has been having issues locking and unlocking the car for a while now but itís getting worse.

The symptoms are:
I can come out in the morning and unlock the car and the alarm will beep. I can drive 2 miles and get out and when I try to lock the car, the doors lock but the alarm didnít engage. I can get back in and drive 2 blocks and this time the alarm will arm and the door lock. Drive it for 20 minutes and, when I try to lock it by pressing the center button, nothing will happen. Pressing the center button repeatedly does nothing. If I then press the unlock button, I can hear the door lock unlock and then, when I press the center button again, the doors will lock.
There is no rhyme, reason or pattern to when it arms or just locks as it can vary in widely in in the course of a day Ė even hours. I donít believe its temperature related as the car can do all of these various actions in the course of hours and, being in Southern California, the temp doesnít vary much anyway.
Now, its gotten to where it will not lock or unlock at all and Iím forced to use the key to unlock and lock the doors.

I have similar challenges with the passenger mirror going down when put in reverse. This worked for years and then, all of the sudden, the mirror would stop going down seconds after it starts going down (about ľ as far down as usually goes). It did this for about 9 months and then completely stopped attempting to go down at all. After about 1 Ĺ year of it never moving, it all of the sudden started going all the way down again. Itís been working for about 6 months and now itís stopping again.
Other than these two electrical problems, I have no issues with the car.
Any idea on how to fix the locking/arming issue, or the backup mirror issue would be appreciated.
Thanks

Take your key and find a store that has a keyfob tester, this is where I would start. Many auto part stores have these, I have seen them at Home Depot as well.

You might have a number of different issues as well.

Check out www.bmwgm5.com for more info.

This is just added side info but my 2000 328Ci has a mind of its own sometimes too, since new.

Every now and again it decides the passenger side mirror isn't going to drop when in reverse.

And sometimes when I want to move the electric driver's seat adjustment to the number 2 setting for myself (from my wife's number 1 setting),
Sometimes I can just hit the #2 button and release and the seat moves all the way back. Sometimes I have to hit it and hold it.

I have a similar kind of glitch with the auto up and seal door windows but it is just too hard to describe.

If my German was better I'd ask the car why it does those things.

If the engine is running or possible the ignition is turned on you have to hold the seat button until the correct position is reached.

If the car it turned off and/or the ignition is not on you just push the button once for the seat adjustment.

That could very well be, jfoj.

When it comes to building cars, Germans are great.
When it comes to electronics, stick with the Taiwanese.

Good point. I'll also start using the second key just to add that test.

Assuming it is not the key, what's the suggested next steps towards a diagnosis?
Thanks

So I've tried my other key and while it will not unlock the doors, the front seat and mirrors will move to the stored position of that key. Pressing the unlock button on the first key moves the seat and mirrors back.

I take it that means the antenna is still good and that the keys themselves are good as the seats and mirrors move according to the key used.

Any ideas on what's left to try?
Thanks

I so agree! My 2000 328i headlights remain on when I've turned them off and locked the car. I have to unlock, start the engine , turn the lights off, then turn the car off. Sometimes it won't unlock, sometimes it won't lock. Random electrical issues since the second year. Check engine light has gone on and off. No codes to identify the problem. I maintain it faithfully, it does have electrical issues in my opinion. Maybe the more recent models are better. Heater issues, engine fumes when the heater is on and the air is being recycled within the car. It's So CA so it's not snowing, but at night it's cold and uncomfortable to open the windows to clear the fumes. In spite of these problems I still love my solid built 328i. Yes, it hiccups if I turn the corner and accelerate really fast, that throws a code and the check engine light comes on until I stop and turn the car off. Idiosyncrasies I don't like, but aren't constant. Worst problem has been intermittent problems not shifting into reverse. Still love the car . . . 95% of the time.

That's EXACTLY what happens to my car and the dealer said I need a new transmission! I thought that was crap and now see you have exactly the same issue!

Something similar happens sometimes when starting out straight from a light. The car seems to hesitate in a manner that feels like a transmission slip but I've always felt like it was some hesitation from the engine. The two issues seem related to me.

How many miles do you have on your car?

Thanks for your note - I feel somewhat better knowing that the symptoms I'm experiencing are not unique to me.
