Soylent, the all-in-one supplement, is about to blow up.

Read the full interview here: http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/rob-r..._source=vicefb

Quote:
Remember Rob Rhinehart? I'm sure you do because it's hard to forget about a guy existing solely on vitamin puke. A few months ago we wrote about Soylent, an incredibly nutritious "food replacement" smoothie that Rob, a 24-year-old engineer, had been making and consuming as his only food source for almost five weeks. On one hand, it did look a bit like semen, but on the other, Rob claimed that by drinking it every day he'd never have to eat again. Given that starvation is a fairly major problem in the world at the moment and the planet's population will likely surpass 9 billion by 2050, Rob's invention seems like an important one.

Since we last talked to him, Rob and Soylent have become famous. His project has been derided as "dangerous", "ludicrous", and "a red flag for a potential eating disorder" by nutrition experts. Fortunately for Rob, the supporters of Soylent have been generous: a crowdfunding project for his fancy health goo raised almost $800,000 in under 30 days. Now Rob is the CEO of the Soylent Corporation; his hobby has officially turned into a career. His management team might look like the kind of technically-minded nerds who'd want to consume most of their meals in the form of a beige, odourless powder mix, but they're also the potential forefathers of a famine cure.

With over $1 million in preorders already received for Soylent worldwide, it seems like this stuff is going to stick around. I caught up with Rob to ask how it's all going for Soylent - which some are already calling "the future of food".

I guess this is the answer to my question of, "Why haven't they invented something like Bachelor Chow yet?"

I'm saying the following based on the assumed premises that this concoction proves to be legitimately nutritious (the guy's been using it for seven months... it can't be THAT bad):

On a personal level, I can see this replacing breakfast and lunch for me. Dinner is something I will always enjoy, so I'm not giving that up. The amount spent on groceries will go down, which is exactly what I could use right now.

On a global scale, people in famine-stricken countries will be far better off, assuming their governments or mafias (or whatever the hell they deal with) doesn't intercept the shipments of Soylent and "rations" it out to the people.

I can see them needing different varieties to suit a wider variety of nutritional needs or wants... high protein, low fat, low carb, high Calorie, low Calorie, etc. The first example that comes to mind would be people wanting to bulk up; they could drink a high protein and high Calorie mix. When they want to cut, they could do the low carb mix.

Would anyone else be willing to drink this stuff or am I alone here?

You wont see many normal people making the switch. Poor people and hippies will jump all over it. Apparently there is next to nothing in protein in it. Yay...more skinny-fat people.

The problem with it being a "famine cure" is that they likely don't have access to clean, drinkable water in those areas.

I supposed I'd drink the stuff if I were faced with starvation, but no way would I buy this stuff to voluntarily give up actual food.

Exactly. Unless this stuff can be mixed with urine a lot of famished areas are still going to be screwed.

Why? This is a great way for those people who want to eat clean but don't have the time to do it get what they want. It's also perfect for those people who just want a quick "meal" on the go.

I'm sure it tastes like sh!t though.

Yeah, and the SOY part of Soylent seems to suggest at least one (undesirable) ingredient.
