Shocks/struts for 325xi

I just bought a 2003 325xi and it needs shocks/struts.

Looking around, Bilstein seems to make fronts and Sachs makes rears. I don't like mixing brands so any suggestions? I would like something close to a factory ride quality as my wife has back problems and doesn't want it stiffer.

Thanks!

Make sure to check the front control arm and rear trailing arm bushings, along with the front inner and outer ball joints and tie rods.

All those wear and are due for replacement when the struts are if not done already.

You might as well order some Eibach springs to go with those shocks/struts...

It looks like we have the same car and the same surroundings, Wisconsin winters. I'm going to need to do this eventually, please post how the install goes and where you purchase the dampers.

I will be doing it this weekend.

I bought them at www.shox.com. If you ask them for a quote, they will give you the $499 with shipping price. Online it was somewhere in the $711 - 20% or $580 or so.

I ordered all the hardware from Newegg and Bav Auto.

We shall see how it goes. Probably going to get the spring compressor from Autozone.

I don't want to lower the car. The springs seem in good shape. We shall see when I pull them this weekend.

I will almost bet you that one of the rear springs is broken.... Springs are cheap.

Hey Paul how did you make out? I am about to order oem front struts question for this tread did you also replace the front strut mounts?, spring pads upper and lower, and damper guard and bump stop? I have 82k miles and wondering if I can reuse all those parts and just replace struts.

Thanks.

I got the struts and shocks Friday. The rest of the parts didn't show up in time for me to do it last weekend.

I did order the rest of the parts because I figured I don't want to take them apart more than once.

I am probably going to take Big Rick's advice and order the Eibach springs because it is kinda droopy compared to the front.

So far, www.advanceautoparts.com is the cheapest for the springs because they have a 15% off coupon through the end of the month and offer free shipping. $237.99 delivered.

Finally have all the parts. I did the rears today as they were the worst.

I had noticed a puddle by the right rear wheel and was concerned that it was a caliper.

Anyhow, took the wheel off and the shock was soaked. It had failed spectacularly!

Then pulled out the springs and they were broken, as Big Rick suggested.

Car drives much better! Even with the Eibach lowering springs, the rear end is higher up.

They will settle some. Don't forget a 4-wheel alignment to make sure camber is is dialed after the small drop.

Actually, with the non-broken spring and the thinner upper spring pad it actually raised it.

So far my wife likes it so much better. I'll do the fronts this weekend because I had forgotten to order the front bump stops.

Nice huh? The car has 166,000 miles on it and has been in Wisconsin all of its life.
