Mid 90s for me... You had east coast (early Nas, Jay-Z, Mobb Deep, Biggie, Big L, Tribe, De La, all of the split off Wu Tang members' albums, etc), Southern rap was coming up (Outkast - ATLiens, Goodie Mob), and the West Coast was still going strong (tupac, snoop, hieroglyphics). I think '95-97 were pinnacle years for all of that. I stopped paying attention when Puff Daddy/Mase started blowing up...

I hope all of you know that Ice Cube wrote songs for Eazy, and even taught him to be "gangsta."

I always loved the more chill jazz/blues inspired stuff.

always and forever,

Funny this thread came up, I was just looking into how to sample 93 'til infinity the other day.

I also didn't learn about atmosphere until '07, but he quickly became one of my favorites for telling a good story, not to mention some great beats.

^^ Those artists are more in the hip hop/underground category IMO. Good artists nonetheless. Don't forget Heiroglyphics, Shape shifters, 2mex, the whole project blowed. Aceyalone & Abstract Rude!
then there's Living Legends
