Testing a used car is a testiment to the stuructural design - and the GMC/Chevy combo failed miserably. Maybe I just drove multiple lemons with the exact same impression. Or maybe they really are crap. I don't like to play guessing games with a tens-of-thousands dollar purchase. I never get the same impression of crappy quality out of, for example, a Toyota. Mazda CX-9s was the best reasonably priced, reasonably sized option from my experience. Opinions vary.

But either way (since I love Honda but hate the Pilot). We bought an Odyssey. Hate the image. But love the van.

I will say that my opinion was also somewhat validated with out best friends buying a GMC Acadia Denali. That thing is falling apart after 2 years. 2-days ago, the husband and I were outside putting the rubber trim back on the roof because it was just flopping up there. They have had nagging problems since the purchase. I still wouldn't touch the Acadia.
good way to assess. thx for info

Pilot is actually bigger than the 2013 Pathfinder in almost all passenger categories and cargo volume...look up dimensions. Can't do anything about the looks, but in serving the function of being a utility car, the Pilot can't be beat.

Thoughts on Nissan Pathfinder

Why not Tahoe? Also the pathfinder and 4runner are both nice in most recent years. The 4 runner survived the redesign. It's still awesome. The pathfinder did not.

As much as I don't like GM, the Tahoe (and the seemingly endless related variants) are nice, in my opinion. I had a Yukon as a rental once and I really liked it. More space than I knew what to do with. And they don't seem too bad on the used market, either.

Just my .02 as someone who knows little about this category.

frankly i didn't know they still made the tahoe. the thing was a tank from what i remember. if they've refined it, it may be an option. my wife who is petite would need to be able to drive the thing too. of course only from the kitchen to the store, but still.

Call me crazy but I had a Ford Flex rental about 2 months ago. It was actually a nice SUV on the inside and had the in the floor 3rd row. It has a love it or hate it exterior shape but overall seemed pretty solid.

I went in with very low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised.

I thought it handled decently (I expected it to feel like I would imagine drunk driving while blind would feel) but that wasn't the case.

And I'm surprised you don't see many of them. Every time I drive through mid-Illinois I see tons of them.

Anyway, I think it's worth a look.

I can't say I'm overly impressed with the new models, because the only thing they've really made better is the interior. It's now based on a car frame so it's not as rugged. It doesn't really get that much better fuel economy which is weird. (I'm comparing '02ish to a new one) and in the suburbans case, the new one actually had less room than our '03. We need a suburban for the space and can't replace it because nothing rivals it. For the money, I would absolutely not upgrade to new because they're not much different. A very clean fully loaded last gen burban/Tahoe is comparable to new ones.
That said, I do love them and they're so versatile. In fact, I think the suburban is much more useful as a truck in just about every way compared to a pickup

As someone who's always warm, I think ventilated seats are one of the best inventions ever.

+1

Got a cx9 for the wife. Third row seats fold flat into the floor. Good for hauling the dog + kid around. Gas mileage could be better (I think we get about 20ish), but its not bad for the size/class, I guess.

Don't do it, especially if you plan on using it for towing. The new body style has all sorts of issues with transmission failure since they implemented the CVT. They also made the floors flat (a la quest) which includes a redesigned/flat floor and different/more faulty fuel tank. The 2012s were the last of the Pathfinders, now they're just big Muranos.

The late 2000s Nissan SUVs all have a reputation for poor reliablity.

My car before this was a 2003 Toyota 4Runner with the 4.7 V8 that I bought in 2008 planning to drive for one year. It was so reliable and easy to live with that it changed my plans. My mother has a 2004 with 4.0 V6. They've both been really incredible vehicles. They drive really well for a solid rear axle vehicle. The cargo area is large enough that you can fit a queen mattress inside and shut the hatch. They have a good weight to them and hold value very well.

My 4Runner was at 197k and still rock solid when it was hit while parked and totalled. My mothers is at 199k and still solid. The only thing that's tempermental about the 4Runner are the calipers (have a bad habit of seizing) and you MUST keep the moonroof lubricated or it will eventually bind and it's a PITA to tear down and fix (there is no manual crank). The oil changes are a little expensive because you need to have your driveshaft lubed to prevent a clunking after hard braking.

You truly cannot beat the 4Runner for reliablity, utility, and performance. the 03 V6s and 04 V6s came with a 4 speed auto which is considered less reliable (but my mothers is trouble free at 199k). Anything 05+ will come with the 5 speed. Also, the X-REAS suspension that comes on the sport tends to leak around 100,000 miles and needs to be completely replaced to fix, so be mindful of that.

got back into investigating cars. Pathfinder was at top of the list with Traverse just behind. Out were the explorer and outlier.

just checked out the pilot, highlander, cx9, and just by chance the durango. wife didn't like the feel of the pilot. cx9 was too small. highlander was nice, but for the price seemed really cheap. not sure why they go for so much? redrove the pathfinder and it was still a top contender, but the cvt issue is scaring me away. drove the traverse again and seemed like a step down in quality.

NFRs2000nyc, I'm seriously considering the 2014 Durango!! the car blew me away! soft, quiet, comfortable ride. lots of room! great interior and options. it was a 2013 crew trim. reviews on the durango have been great! most people like me remember the old ones and just checked the new ones out on a whim and were amazed! good gas mileage, great handling.

have been reading and i think the 2014's have enough improvement changes to go that route instead of the 2013. biggest change is the 8 speed tranny having better gas mileage and power dist. thinking the 2014 limited trim is what i want. don't need the hemmy. thoughts? do you have your yet?

You guys all suck at recommending cars. OP says he wants three rows and I see recommendations for cars without third row seating. Every thread this happens.
