Chugging noise noticeable when idling, please help

Hi there, this is my first post and it's about my first car, so please bear with me if I don't know much! I've had my 04 325xi for about 2,500 miles now and I haven't had a problem yet. It has 80.5k miles on it but a very reputable mechanic told me it was in very good shape. Recently I noticed that the engine makes a "chugging" sound that I can only hear with the car in idle and with the windows down. I haven't noticed any other issues or dips in performance, so I'm not really sure what to attribute the noise to. Thanks for reading, I appreciate any help.

-Jack

Can you post a photo of your tach or upload a video with sound so the members can get a better idea?

I can't seem to upload the video. I think I'll just have it looked over by my mechanic. It sounds to me like a belt that needed replacing down the road has gone a bit early. Thanks anyway!

Edit: Sorry, meant to say that an uncle told me it might be a belt, doesn't really sound like a belt problem that I've heard.

Does it only do it for maybe a minute after it first starts? Kind of sounds like a belt pulley. I would pull the belts and spin/check the bearings in the pulleys. Before replacing mine they sounded rough by hand and had a little play.

That's the DISA valve, the flap is broken. Easy to fix but will run you about $200, make sure you're careful when you remove it so that the pin in the flap doesn't fall out and into the intake.

It does it on a cold start for about 10-15 minutes before going away.

Sounds good, thanks for the help, I figured that the DISA probably needed replacing. Is there a way to be completely sure that the problem is the DISA valve though? Thanks again, much appreciated.

remove the electrical connector located on the disa and the noise should go away if that's the problem.

Or remove the valve and see if the flap is still tight in there. If it's bad, it'll flop around with no resistance.

If it is the DISA you're better off repairing it, than replacing it. Here's why- http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=923291
