Well this explains a lot!

I thought that I might need new lower control arms and bushings, then I noticed this while I was under the hood this afternoon.

Might be the picture, but does the hole in the shock tower look oblong?

This is what a proper strut tower looks like:

That almost looks rendered. Since this car is bone stock, it would be comical to install a strut brace at this point.

Many cars benefit more from handling improvements than power upgrades. You'd be surprised what upgraded springs, shocks, new bushings and yes, strut braces and roll bars can do to e feel and handling of a car.

It can also help prevent bending (mushrooming) of the strut tower. And it's also not retarded...

It is rendered via Photoshop or another editing program. But anyway, see the above post, it serves more than one function.

It's missing the top nut.

It's supposed to have the top nut.

Not to mention the strut should be centered in the mount ... complete fail

It could be lens distortion but the tower may be mushroomed also. It definitely needs some attention.

There's no mushrooming. It's just the camera lens angle.

Re: Well this explains a lot!

How about those reinforcement plates ESC sells, are those worth the investment?

I also saw someone selling home made one's, are those worth a look and can they be used in conjunction with a strut bar?

There is a Genuine BMW reinforcement plate for the strut towers. And I've heard and agree that a strut brace would help to further strengthen the area. The thing you have to look out for is the bolt length on the strut mounts. Too short and you can't fit both the plate and the strut bar.

Did I suggest that it was retarded? I understand the benefits. For my car however, there is much lower hanging fruit. I just recently bought this car, and at 220000 miles, I think a lot of the rubber is shot. Although based my recent visual inspection under the car, some things look surprisingly new, e.g., the transmission mounts and the flex disk. I'm fairly sure that the sub-frame and/or differential bushing are bad. I've got the infamous thunk coming from the rear (especially if I accelerate fast, then let off the accelerator. I get the thunk-tha-thunk-tha-thunk). Also, I can see that the front struts have been leaking, and they feel like they're not dampening. Anyway, my point is that I have other things that need to be addressed first.

OP, your strut tower appears to be mushroomed. If the three bolts aren't perfectly pointing in the same direction, you have mushrooming.
