Making the move from Tassie to the big smoke. Recommendations for location?

Hi guys,

Well I have had enough of little old Tassie. At the top of my trade down here and a combination of pay, lifestyle and personal circumstances is making me consider a trip over the puddle to live and work on the mainland.

Brief history:

Qualified mechanic & auto elec. Current Workshop Manager.
12 yrs experience
Specialised in BMW, Audi, Merc, HSV + others (Factory training).
Air con license.

So basically I'm looking for a new job in a new location. Have worked in both dealers and indy workshops (indy preferred for obvious reasons )

Considering Melbourne, Sydney or Gold Coast.

Can any fanatics give me a heads up on what they love/hate about the areas they live?

Any insight would be awesome. Thanks fellas

Gold Coast is a concrete jungle with hideously shocking traffic every time I go there...

Come to Brisbane...always on the lookout for someone good to service my car

Sounds good, have some family up there. Plus I like the fact nearly every QLD job I've looked at has the "knock off at 2:30pm on friday" incentive. Haha

Just need a decent employer and I'd be there. You know any good indys up there?

Don't worry I'd hook fellow members up :-)

Heard good things about Prestige & Performance (Mike Webber). They've just expanded into new premises and pretty sure they were looking for more staff. Not sure if positions have already been filled yet though.

My 2cents. I like all the places mentioned just some more than others and since I last talked about this I have done a full 180 on Sydney. I have always hated Sydney but have only ever stayed about 20km from the city so about 4 months ago I decided to check out the city and lived it up in Circular Key for a week and absolutely loved it.

Melbourne & QLD are still my favourites, both the city and the burbs. The last times I have been to Brissy & GC it has been a lot more rougher than I ever remembered with so many meatheads walking around though.

I haven't been to Tassy but know a few that have and they all say you have the best most beautiful roads and scenery in the country.

Am I dreaming or did I hear Worx was looking for someone?

Melbourne is awesome and cheaper than Sydney.

Have you considered opening your own workshop? Sounds like you have a fair bit of expirience

+1 to this.

Just need the capital to get off the ground.

Perhaps something to keep on the cards whilst working for someone else and you settle down first?

Re: Making the move from Tassie to the big smoke. Recommendations for location?

Thanks for the input guys.

I have considered going out on my own but as has been mentioned capital is the problem. Would hate to think how much scan tools alone would cost me let alone all the other equipment
But definately something I consider later on.

Melbourne and Sydney I have spent a fair bit of time in and like both places (although in Sydney is only spent 4 weeks around Homebush and I doubt my mechanic wage could afford the rent there) Brisbane I've never been to.

Just a matter of finding the right job in the right place.

If you are seeking lifestyle then the Northern Rivers of NSW is the way to go (around Byron Bay) within 45 minutes to Gold Coast.

When he said 'Big Smoke' he wasn't referring to the availability of marijuana..

It does look damn nice up there actually. Would only need to find a decent workshop up that way or somewhere close. You know if there are any Euro speciality workshops up that way Constantine? Just hope there is not too many kombi vans from YGOAMG and Declan are saying

There is a Euro shop in Ballina. But maybe a guy with good experience in Euro cars could find a place with a good shop anywhere. Lets face it, it's not like Euro owners have a lot of choice out here.

@E46Coupe - Fantastic mate as you can see. Bit of jigging required with getting the right fit but very happy with them
Now just have to stay away from driveways and parking bollards :p

@Constantine - Fair point. My current workshop had next to no bimmers until I started working there and brought a heap in. Main thing I am looking for is a workshop that is well equipped. There is nothing worse than trying to diagnose/repair a car without the gear you need. I have heaps I have brought myself as far as scan tools, factory timing tools etc and a tool box that I could of brought a M3 for but a lot of stuff like exhaust analyzers, wheel alignment gear etc is a bit out of my budget.
