The speakers just extend into the trunk, so as deep as you want!

ya but say the speaker has a magnet of a 4inch size and the depth is 3.25 inch? I just went to measure the whole in the rear deck under where the speakers are and it is barely 4inches across and its not even a circle so event then it isnt 4inchs wide to fit the speakers im looking at putting in. they're dayton RS180-4 7" Reference Woofers

Re: cant find the mount depth on the rear deck speakers

It's going to depend on if you're mounting the speakers on the top panel, or on the steel underneath. Also, the hole underneath if memory serves, isn't centered underneath the top opening, so the mounting depth is going to vary based on the speakers. You'd have to try to mock up with some cardboard, your 7s, with depth and more importantly, magnet size and depth. That's gonna be a trick, but unless you actually have the speaker, not much else. Otherwise, if you pull your top panel, mount some mdf rings to the steel to build it up enough to clear anyway, and then trim the top panel to clear (a 7 won't fit the factory cutout and retain the factory grill). Although if you can manage to mount the speaker so it comes up to just under the panel, you can probably reuse the stock grill. The hard part is just having to test fit or mock it up.

The other option, that I just thought of would be to cut out the holes in the middle of the rear deck where the factory sub normally would go, and then you would avoid the clearance issue altogether.

damn Im probably going to have to mount on top of the rear panel. as for the sub option the non hk sedans dont have the opening for the subs. So that wont work unfortunatly

Ah wasn't sure about the sedans. My coupe has them, sorta. The outlines are there, but would need to be actually cut out. Let us know how you make out.

Re: cant find the mount depth on the rear deck speakers

My 6" Dayton drivers are 2.76". Without the black OEM damping material underneath, my PVC mounts were sitting at about 1/4-3/8" below the lower inside lip of the rear deck speaker cutout. At this depth, the rubber boots over my magnets were just touching the metal below

I have run a bead of RTV around the bottom of the PVC mounts, and I also have some vinyl damping that I'm about to install. That should get my mounts closer to the rear deck and clear the boots from the metal below.

I think the hardest thing about going with a custom rear mount was drilling though the metal. I had to resort to using a carbide Dremel bit for the pilot holes. I tried using a drill with a cobalt bit, but the rear window prevented my from getting a good angle. I did drill the final holes using a cobalt bit from underneath.

Edit: 1/4-3/8" not 3/16"
