Intake/Exhaust questions

Just curious if anyone has done any work on their intake or exhaust? I am not really looking for any major performance increases, but i would like my car to sound a little more aggressive/meaner. Also I don't want to do anything that is going to be hard on my engine and cause problems, or really loud. So if anyone knows of some inexpensive ways to make my 325xi sound nice let me know. Looking for a "deeper" sound.

Search golf tee mod.

I tried to get a better tone myself but ended up with an annoying drone all the time and switched it all back to stock. It was a huge waste of money. FWIW, I'd stick with the stock system...

axle back exhaust is probably going to be the cheapest way to change the sound.

Golf tee mod. Eh. Just youtube it. Not something I'd do, but pretty basic/harmless.

Golf tee mod makes it sound a little deeper, but don't expect a world of difference.

Thanks for the advice. I checked it out and the valve was stuck shut so I just knocked it 1/2 way open with a screw driver. Your'e right not a big difference but it does have juuust a little bit deeper tone, which is exactly what I was looking for. The last thing I wanted was for my car to sound like it had an exhaust leak or straight piped. Next task.. Gotta get these windows tinted!!

Intake/Exhaust questions

I did a custom exhaust on my 330xi.. Sound really aggressive. Not too loud but def a head turner. It was relatively cheap. I paid 70.00 for the muffler on ebay and the shop charged me 250.00 to make the pipes, flanges, y pipe and install the muffler. Definately noticeable in hp gain. Nothing too serious though. No intake. I'll see if i can upload a video clip.

+1 golf tee mod. It gives a noticeably deeper tone, but only under 2k rpm. Definitely not too loud.

people are doing muffler deletes which adds a nice tone and is cheap. wont gain any horsepower though.

question for the tee mod. i see people have issues with it sticking closed. im assuming it can get stuck open? mine is open when car is off and at idle.

op heres a video of the muffler delete

I like loud intakes and quiet exhausts.

I have a Res delete + a Vibrant muffler and it sounds quite nice, its the deep noise your looking for. Many people also go for the muffler delete, I would youtube some videos so that you get a better idea.

For the intake, if you dont want to spend much money I would suggest any Ebay intake. If you want to go big a lot of people go for the K&N intake.
There won't be much of a sound difference between the two intakes, but the K&N intake might help you with performance just a little bit but nothing to noticeable

There are no CAT Back systems to buy for the E46 325XIs that I'm aware of, but there are several Rear Muffler options that will give a deeper "tone/throat" without begin annoyingly load. I but a Scorpion on my '03 325 xi and it has a nice tone, but inside the interior its not much louder than the stock. It could be made louder by having a muffler shop remove the front muffler and making pipes to fit the space. Since this mufflers are all aftermarket and polished stainless steel, cost will be $400 and up and you have to cut the old muffler off at the exact spot to slide the new muffler on and clamp it tight.

Now for the E46 330XIs, there are a couple of complete CAT Back Systems available including one from B & B. THe B & B Triflow system will definitely make the car louder, will give a very modest HP increase and costs the most. Not sure why no one has available a CAT Back system for the 325XI.

If you go with an aftermarket rear muffler such as Magna Flow, Scorpion, etc, you will also shave off some vehicle weight as their mufflers do not weight nearly as much as the factory unit.

As far as an Intake goes, for my money, I'd just put either a K & N or afe re-usable filter in the stock air box. Will give better filtering (though some will say the oil messes up the Mass Air Meter Grid), they are cleanable and re-usable, increase air flow and do not give the load noise of some cold air intake systems plus they are a lot cheaper than a good cold air intake system.
