Want to buy a high mileage m3

I'm looking at an 03 m3 with 178k miles 6speed. Seems to be in good working order. How long can these engines last?

depends on the previous owner maintenance history. maintenance > anything. a car can last you a whole life time if you do maintenance. one thing to look for is their subframes, they're prone to crack

I'm just worried about the strength and longetivity of the s54 engine. The seller has very good records. Can the engine last another 100k?

Have a compression test done, that will give you an idea of the overall health of the engine.

The subframe looks good, and not broken yet. I drove it, and i think it needs a new clutch which the owner said it does but it's not terrible. the engine is perfect, and runs great with no check engine light. Has anyone driven and m3 to 200k+ miles on the original engine.

Well, the owner said he doesn't want to deal with changing the clutch, and it's due for a cooling system overhaul. If there was something wrong with the engine, wouldn't it run bad, smoke, rough idle, tick, through engine light at high revs, make weird noise at high revs, have low power? The car has none of these symptoms.

Anyways how much do mechanic usually charge for compression leakdown test?

M3 badge not in the right place. Maybe due to accident.
Valve check records would be important since they need to be inspected and adjusted as needed every 30K miles.

Thats a good price, since the car has 178k I think the price is exactly where it should be. Do not touch this car without a PPI, however. The rear diff has to come out to check the subframe for cracks. As far as I remember the PPI also includes the leakdown test. You dont want an M3 with 180k that will end up costing you 14k after repairs. I would only buy this one if it was immaculate and in need of very little work.

It's not a jug of milk. It doesn't have an expiration date. How long the engine will last depends on how it was treated. Get a PPI done.

Okay, soo I just check it out, and it actually not too bad. It may have a blown headgasket, because I revved the **** out of and there was a little bit of very very very light steam, from the exhaust. But there is no mixing of fluids, and it has been raining a lot lately. The fenders are fading a little bit, and the clutch probably needs replacement in the next 10k miles. The owner said he would let it go for 5k.
