Aux fan problems

My aux fan only runs when the AC is turned on. If the AC isn't on I can smell the engine getting hot. Is this a problem with the fan electronics, the thermostat, or something else.
thanks scott

Aux fan problems

I believe the push fan only comes on when the A/C is on and the pull fan is thermostatic controlled by the DME based on coolant temperature (assuming it's electric). I could be wrong, I'm just assuming.

does the engine actually get hot? i.e. temperature gauge?

Probably just burning some oil.

Aux fan problems

As said. The smell is probably VCG leak, not engine running hot.

The aux fan will only come on when the AC is on and/or when the mechanical fan is not enough to keep the temp down. If all is running properly the aux fan will only come on after extended periods of idle in hot weather (unless the AC is on)

The temp gauge stays in the middle all the time. If I have the AC on, the engine doesn't smell hot (like burnt oil). When I have the AC off the fan doesn't run and the engine smells hot. Am I to assume the VCG leak/smell is simply being blown away by the AC fan?

How many fans you have depends on whether the transmission is automatic, or manual, not whether it's coupe, or sedan.
If you only have one fan, your car is a stick shift. (unless someone has done a fan swap)

Learn to unlock the OBC hidden functions to monitor the actual coolant temperature, because the gauge is buffered and inaccurate.

That said, if the gauge stays in the center, the car doesn't overheat.
