Of course not. Both sides are too concerned with blaming the other at this point. Had they sat down and worked on this a month ago (budget is coming due at the end of September? When did that happen???), we could have avoided another round of last minute bickering.

But it's ok. We'll probably make it through this one just to have to do it again in two weeks.

Congress is a joke.

Would be nice. Although I'm sure politicians would still find a way to exclude themselves and continue being paid their salaries and benefits.

This upset me. The fact that they still get paid while the little guy gets sh*t on. Should the Government be furloughed and go without pay, Congressmen should work without pay.

Duh, Congress would never make themselves follow the same laws as the average citizen.

New goal in life. Become a congressman, sh!t on the little guy, and point the finger at corporations.

New goal in life, become CEO of a major Defense Contractor and take it out on the little guy by profiting on unused funds allocated to an employee for health insurance. Instead of either paying it back to the employee in cash or some sort of benefit (e.g. extra PTO), as a CEO I'll pocket it and spread the wealth among corporate leadership.

Yeah, it's a little more serious than not being able to go to the museums and national parks. It costs a lot of money to shut the government down, especially when counting the man hours for planning for it. Yes, essential services continue, but they don't get paid. Unless congress agrees to pay them retroactively. Every one overseas will continue working without pay.

All the regular bills of a governed employee are still due, all our normal expenses are still incurred, the difference is we're just not getting a paycheck.

If a furlough lasts long enough, we also become eligible for unemployment. Which is another drain on the economy.

So no, shutting down the government is not a viable answer.
