I believe I've found a viable option for LED headlights. But it's expensive...

I know there are several options for HID projector retrofits, but going the route of LED would be unique.

The specs claim they put out... brace yourselves... 17,500 maximum candela (1 candela = 1 lumen, from my understanding). SEVENTEEN THOUSAND. A typical D2S bulb throws out ~3,500. Since these units are fairly large (a bit larger than FX-R projectors), I believe they would work quite nicely in the E46 headlight assemblies (with a bit of elbow grease, hacking, cutting, and JB Weld).

The downside? The price. I've found the low beams for $216 a piece and the high beams for $262 a piece. With that said, you're looking at roughly $1,000 for all four assemblies (assuming you want high beam LEDs as well).

Light output from the Model 8700's seems to be pretty good (there are videos on YouTube), so I can only imagine these would be significantly better.

Just figured I'd toss 'em out there!

NOTE: I am not affiliated with JW Speaker in any way. I always thought it would be awesome to have LED headlights.

Go for it and if it works you opened an entire new way to go instead of hid retrofit.

If I had $1,000 to spend on a full LED upgrade, I would. I think it would look sweet in my E30.

I am now accepting donations.

Are you paying for the lights and shipping me the headlight assemblies?

Re: I believe I've found a viable option for LED headlights. But it's expensive...

I was looking into this kind of thing earlier before I did my quad d2s retrofit. I found hella makes a bi-led projector. But it was about $2000 for four projectors back then.

I'll consider it... But these things also keep me on the road for my commute to and from school so probably not :/
