Windshield top latches....

How do you open these...if you used the emergency top closing procedure , and the latches closed before the top was to the windshield.?

There is a tab you pop out from the center of the plastic enclosure where the locking motor is. You turn the hex in there to unlock the latches. The plastic enclosure with the tab is on the inside of the convertible top (above your head in the center).

Re: Windshield top latches....

Then your latches are broken. There are lots of recent threads about the latches and latch motor breaking, search don't pm me.

Does the hex just keep spinning, or does it eventually stop as you spin it? If it keeps spinning, a gear in the motor may be broken. http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=1004823

Yep, make sure you're turning it the correct way.

If this piece falls out in your hand, then there is likely a gear broken inside the motor:

If it keeps turning and nothing appears to happen, then the plastic piece on the latch itself is probably broken.

Either way you'll have to bust out the Sawzall like I did in my thread above. Cost me ~$450 to do it myself. If the latch was broken also it would have cost me almost $1000 to do this. A shop would likely charge a minimum of $1500.

Re: Windshield top latches....

Since you did it yourself, can you tell me where you got the instructions? I got that $1500 quote too. I want to give it a shot. Is it a complicated process?
