Just FYI, that R^2 is 0.0025.

That's absolutely abysmal, and quite literally says there's almost zero correlation. In other words, 99.75% of the data is unexplained.

What he should have done is performed a Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for like distributions - and seeing how close those distributions are, I am very certain that would say they're equivalent.

I'm confused, probably by the bad writing of the reporter...

"When composing histograms of the scientific inference abilities of liberals and conservatives, he discovered that those who described themselves as tea party supporters came out pretty well, based on National Science Foundation standards of evaluation:"

"In fact, tea party members tend to be more scientifically literate than other self-described conservatives, who have slightly negative scores, overall. These findings should give both liberal and GOP establishment types pause over their caricatures of tea party constituents."

Is he comparing
1. TP members against all non-TP member (including democrats) or
2. TP members against other conservative (Republicans) non-TP members ?

(1) includes people who never went to school, and naturally more likely to be poor, and therefore would likely identify themselves as democrats. That's not an unbiased sampling.
(2) would be fair sampling, and wouldn't surprise me at all. TP members are a selected minority within the conservatives and likely not include the typical rednecks and trailer park folks.
But then why did the author say liberal in the first paragraph?
