gauges not working

My daughter purchased a 2000 BMW 323I. The gauges were working when arriving at home. Found where someone had had an amp in the trunk and the power and ground wire were just laying there in the trunk floor. I disconnected the power wire from the battery and while it was off my wife started the car. I replaced the wire after removing the amp wire and we took it for another drive around the block and noticed the gauges were not working. All the fuses are good. Carried it to a local shop and had a diagnostic test run and several codes came up 83 and 84 deal with "No signal CAN to instrument cluster 2 & 3." I was then told it could be fixed but he didn't have time to deal with it. I've never been told that before! So I guess I'm left to figure out what happened and how to fix it.

I have done some tests and I have power through the fuse box all the way to the plugs at the cluster connections and have a good ground.

Can anyone help with this problem?
