Re: M 235i - It's here! Thoughts?

Anyway, back on topic, it's almost guaranteed to have electric staying. Hopefully it will be better than the f30 as they should have learned a few things in the previous implementations.

Unfortunately it's a fact of life at this point. Every new car you buy going forward is going to have it because it's low hanging fruit for automakers to grab another 1-1.5 mpg for cafe regulations. The new 911 steering isn't universally hated so there is hope...

The steering in the F30 isn't bad.

Your steering wheel will be physically disconnected from the road, soon, like in the Q60. Saves weight and mechanical complexity, and is overall cheaper.

Same with your brakes.

It will all be simulated steering feel and brake pressure. 'Tis the future.

+1 When you actually look at it, electric steering really isn't the end of the world. They can definitely bring back the "heavy" feel people desire with the right control system outputs. I mean, my Mercedes has pretty light steering, it isn't the end of the world. And that is coming from the 135 which had probably the heaviest steering or tied for the heaviest hydraulic of I think almost any bmw ever made.

Not bad. Except you'll never find one that isn't specced much higher.

2 Gran Coupe Concept looks good, but looks like a chop...

if made, the price won't come close to CLA but retains RWD so it would win in my book

Well it's good that it will be available, but this is obviously the worst possible way for BMW to make it available. It will likely be prohibitively expensive ~$1.5k+ plus installation and you're going to be stuck paying dealer labor if you don't want to void your powertrain warranty. Because of this, nobody will probably buy it and BMW will stop producing it citing low demand.

By the time the car goes out of warranty and drops in price enough for the real enthusiasts to buy one, there won't be any available and having one will be like a pot of gold.

I agree that it will be 1.5K+. Does anyone remember what the cost was on the E30 325is or E36 325is? It will probably be something you can get port installed for no cost. BMW is offering that on the M performance parts. Fingers crossed the do the same for this.

Not sure which is better. Port installed at no labor cost, or dealer installed and have a spare differential as a back-up or to sell? Probably the free labor, but something definitely makes me uneasy about buying a whole new differential and then not getting to keep the one that came on the car originally.

Also, on a personal note, I was hoping to do a euro delivery so not sure how that will factor in. Probably be forced to pay the dealer to install once it arrives although I guess it could still be port installed.

I still think one of the Best BMWs of the last 10 years was the E46 330 performance package sedan. Wish I would have picked one up back when I had the chance. The few that I see for sale now are generally tired or 'well worn'.
I think a few days in a loaner isn't enough time to properly evaluate it, and you were likely in a base model 328i. I don't find the F30 335i steering numb at all. Sure, it's nothing like my M3's, but numb? Naw!

Re: 2014 F22 BMW 2 Series Coupe - Official Details

^^ this. E30 guys will tell you how heavy and disconnected an e46 is. Everything is relative.

We're also drawing comparisons to one of the best bmw models of all time so it is unreasonable to think that they will do better with every iteration. Cadillac used the e46 as the dynamic benchmark when developing the ATS.

So the even number bmw's are coupes, but their "gran coupe" counterpart is a sedan, but still a 2.

I'm waiting for a 3/5/7 "gran sedan" that way I can get back into a 3 series coupe

Basically yes, gran coupe models are all 4 door cars with coupe styling a la Mercedes cls and now cla. For a higher price point you get more "style" and sacrifice some practicality. Just like the x6 & upcoming x4.

The 2 gran coupe will have a much lower roof height for rear passengers than the e46 sedan and thus will not be as practical as the sedan version of our car.

Like I said before, BMW is filling every niche. You like the sexy coupe styling but need 4 doors...we've got a car for that.
