*E46's are fairly old cars therefore will require a fair bit of maintenance.Which is not a bad if your mechanically inclined, parts supercheap on the internet, big labour bills if your not a spanner guy.
*Other issue is the fuel bill most 6cly average 12-14L / 100km.Enough to make you think twice every time you feel like going for a spin.
*ALso e46 auto gearboxes are notorious for dying esp after 150k.
*Also insurance would be high for a late model e46 looking at about 1500++ for someone your age.

*** my suggestion would be getting a Honda accord euro 8th gen even better in manual 6spd.cheap to maintain, and you can rice it as much you want., good on fuel and can give you years of worry free motoring.

I owned a facelift 325ci from 120kkms to 180kkms. I would've spent less than 3k on maintenance over 3 years despite doing 'preventative maintenance'

Fuel consumption never exceeded 9.2l and I didn't drive like a grandma.

As Pete said, can't remember the last time I heard of a gearbox failure and most non-Ms on here would have over 150kkms

I bought it when I was 18. Insurance started at just under $1,000 and my last premium at 21 was $600.

Not sure what you're basing your information on...

My first car was a 01 330ci 5 speed that only had 96kms on it. Now it has 138kms. Its been a pleasure to drive this machine everyday. Just do whatever you feel is right...

Wow, before my SC my average was 12L (now 10.5). Also guessing insurance is around 150% cheaper in QLD

The SC improved your fuel efficiency? Da faq!?

Yeah, insurance is a generally cheaper in QLD than NSW however it depends on suburb. That was when I was living on the Sunshine Coast in a quite suburb. Living in Brisbane CBD with the M3 certainly increased the premiums but it's still less than $1,200 p.a.

@Declan, since you seem to have been in a situation most relatable to; why did you buy the 325 over say a new car?

Because it was 2007 when he bought it?

As e46 coupe has pointed out before, obd reading for re flashed chips (ie sc tune) is no longer accurate. Secondly, the supercharger is using power to be turned over, it is only ever used under heavy acceleration, the rest of the time all that air it moves just gets bypassed back to the intake, and that costs economy and power.

Edit: assuming twin screw compressor

Back to op, if you are an enthusiast of the e46, do it and deal with the consequences. If you are unsure that the e46 is what you are after, get something much newer with far less k's.

In a year and a half with a 325 and 330, both cars owe me collectively $1000 in service parts and breakdown parts, with 50,000k of driving.

Fuel economy on the 330 was about 9.6l to 100k, calculated stock. 325 is cheaper to fuel, but going from one to the other, the difference in stock power is really noticeable, combined with 325 being auto, 330 smg.

Because I enjoy driving.. To get a new car for under 40k would've meant going for a boat commodore, a fwd hot hatch (without a turbo due to p-plate restrictions) or something else equally boring / cheap.

The 325 gave me something that had a little bit of poke, handled well, looked good and had a good interior. Plus at the time, 80% of people thought an update e46 coupe was a 'new' car so win win.

Sort of the same as going and buying an e92 now, most your friends will think it's new if it's been well looked after.
