What a bunch of smart asses. So, what you are saying is that you have no idea. I get it. Smart assed responses only make it obvious that you don't understand.

Plug it into a computer, right click on "computer", then click "properties".

Seriously, you need a scanner, such as BMW Scanner 1.4. Then you can scan your car and get a report that reveals something like this:

I had my DME reflashed in March, and you can see how the "Assembly" and "Software" values changed. As far as what they actually mean, you'll have to find TerraPhantm and ask him.

Thanks!

As for the rest of you, you are amusing. Why? Well... you guys all think it's cute that I use the term OS (which is the proper term) and think I'm an idiot. It's amusing that you don't even know me. Or know the fact that I am a very senior engineer and systems architect for the biggest software and hardware company in the world and have been doing it for almost 20 years. It's cute that you think the term OS would only relate to your personal computers, when in fact most devices have an OS of some sort. My refrigerator has an OS. It's cute how you think you know so much, but... well you wouldn't understand.

Software that drives our cars is very low level code that drives embedded hardware. Think of it more like firmware.

Knows software better than anyone and is the best when it comes to all things computers.
Asks forum what operating system is inside his carputer that we have no access to through our screens.

Ok

Yes.... but I had already gone out and read the engineering spec's on the computer in our cars before I asked the question. There are several ASIC chips that are function specific. These ASIC's mostly read sensor input or are controllers for functions like injector specific fuel control. According to the engineering specs, these chips are hardcoded. I.e. these don't get updated. Then there is the operating system that the ASIC's speak to. Yes... this is held in NVRAM (i.e. firmware), but just because it's firmware, doesn't mean that it's not an operating system. All it means when we call something an operating system is that it's software that centrally controls a set of independent functions. There doesn't need to be a screen, a human interface, etc.

There is a lookup table (think small database) that has a set of parameters that BMW codes in that represent how BMW wants the car to run. The OS pull the sensor data from the ASIC's and puts them into RAM, then it makes comparisons to the lookup table. Then, it coordinates with the controller ASIC's to make adjustments. For example... if a sensor reports back a certain number of "non-fires" from spark plug #3, then the OS will coordinate with the fuel injector ASIC to shut off fuel to that cylinder.

The answer that I was looking for was simple. You need to look it up on OBD. I figured that was the case, but wasn't sure if there was one of the menus on the odometer that would allow me to see the version number. I was hoping it was on the odometer, because my OBD software doesn't show the version number.

So, thanks to those who answered... as for the rest of you, you just look foolish.

Seems like you've done your research. I assume you've come across this? http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpos...80&postcount=2

I'm no computer expert, but 1.5 and/or 1.7 may have what you're seeking. Good luck!

No one refers to it as the "operating system". No one. Ever. Anywhere. Then you post this passive-aggressive know-it-all crap:

"Seriously... you guys don't know that one? Operating System. The Operating System version of the DME?"

Boasting on the internet is a pretty surefire way to look foolish. You got your answer. Now have spectacular day. And try not to get butthurt so easily. When someone can't take a joke and resorts to belittling other members and calling them names then posting a paragraph long list of "qualifications" there's a 100% chance that person is a douche.

Wow. Your jimmies are rustled. What's with all the name calling? Are you that insecure? Now it's time to let this sink into the abyss. Like I said, have a spectacular day.
