330ci full exhaust done

Hey guys. A few months back I was looking at getting my full exhaust done (headers to muffler) and I finally got it done so I wanted to share my thoughts and expectations I had and what was the final outcome.

Let me start by saying I'm still a university student so I didn't have much money to spend so for me, the "cheapest way" is a major factor for this mod. I looked at many different videos of exhausts on YouTube because I was told by a mechanic that if I got my exhaust done, the car was going to be VERY loud. He was right. The hardest part to find were the headers and they are also the part that restrict the 330 the most. They are designed in a way that didnít make much sense to me but after I got the exhaust done it became a bit clearer. I bought some headers from Europe for an e36 which bolt on perfectly but donít reach the next part of the exhaust so they are not as long as the original. The original headers have pre cats on them so getting rid of that made a difference, said the mechanic. The rest of the exhaust I got it from the US and the brand was OBX. All the exhaust is stainless steel so looks much nicer than the original.

Now the bit that I wanted to discuss was the sound. Itís way too loud. Cruising from 1 to 3 thousand RPMs is annoyingly loud. Maybe because of the muffler or the resonator but itís a deep sound that would drive anyone insane. Sounds like a civic with a bit muffler. Once the revs go near and past 3k then then it sounds like an e92 M3 (I mean much better). A sound that says ďIím more modified than you thinkĒ.

Ive had the exhaust for almost a week now and I can definitely feel the difference in power. I feel the old headers had more pressure in lower revs because now I feel I lost a bit of power there but I gained more than what I lost in higher revs (3k and up). I didnít do a dyno to back it up with numbers but the car revs faster than before. I have also a K&N air filter and air scoop that goes in the grill to channel air better into the air box. I didnít put a cone air filter because it can never isolate properly the hot air from the engine bay so hot air ends up going (not like it makes much difference anyway). I also put a chip worth $150 modifying the fuel to air mix ratio.

Anyway, the sound is way too loud, especially when I drive at night, I can wake up the entire neighborhood. Inside the car is also too loud. Iíve modified all the sound system in the car and put a new stereo with amps and a sub and I have to put the music quite loud to hear it because the exhaust overpowers it.

I hope this information helped you guys if anyone is deciding to do what I did. If anyone wants pictures or videos, Iím more than happy to upload them.

In retrospect, do you think it would have been better and cheaper to delete the manifold pre cats, and replace the cats with high flows?

Sounds like an interesting project and mod - and sounds like your exhaust is really really loud !

I'm not a mechanic - but surely there is a way to bring the sound down a tad - I'm sure others can chime in

Re: 330ci full exhaust done

Add another resonator or glass pack or something. The sound your hearing in the car is resonance. Low pitched "buzzing" sound.

Also, post a video of the exhaust.

I forgot to say, I did put high flow cats. The original cats are placed after the headers piping. So I deleted the precast placed on the headers and the actual cats I replaced them with high flow cats. The sound can be reduced with a different muffler or resonator, I think. But I got my car back last Thursday and the guy said it will be louder than normal because it's new and it has to get used to the car. I can always take it to an exhaust placed and ask them if it's the resonator or muffler that's making it so loud inside the cabin
