The e36 would have to be mint, you would have a faster car yes, but more expensive servicing insurance mpg etc, is the e36 a vert? if so rear window will be plastic so check for scratches and dull finish, also make sure it has a full service history and if the engine makes any strange rattling noises then watch the vanos is not on its last legs, if its been well looked after then should be good, but why not trade up to an e46m3 or 330?
best of luck whatever you decide

Yeah, unless the E36 is really mint, I wouldn't. The E36s are looking really dated.

E46s have a very classic look, and still not very current

e36 m3 is about as fast as an e46 335. you can easily make more power if your e46 is a turbo.

i wouldn't downgrade. the soft top on e46 is also much better than e36. the price difference is only a few grand so makes little sense to change.

Save and supercharge E46. Best of both.

Personally I'd stick if I were you, and if you feel you need more speed try saving some cash and trade yours for a bigger engined e46, which would work in cheaper than adding parts to your 325.
I nearly did a trade a few years back on a mint e36 m3 for my e46 330 ( both cars verts ) and pulled out the deal last minute and never regret that decision as my 330 was a better ride quality and eventually got an alpina b3s vert when I got that need for speed feeling.
so all in all the e46 is a better car(in my opinion), but if your looking for something that might be considered a classic car shortly then e36,
keep us informed what you do and good luck either way.
