Who's been to Cuba?

So after speaking with one of the technicians at work today who's originally from Cuba, I figured I'd gather up the experiences of OT.

Pros (from what he described to me)
-Really cheap (food, alcohol, hotels)
-Nice beaches
-A lot of people speak English
-Lots of attractive women
-Great food (similar to some of the Puerto Rican food I had growing up)
-45 minute flight from Miami
-Friendly people for the most part

Cons? Anyone here visited?

Haven't been. Would love to go. I hear they use a non-convertible currency for Americans. So what you convert don't expect to get it back. Also, apparently people will bring to your home and cook you good food, the expectation is a tip. I have heard it is a big risk for them to do so but the conditions warrant the chance to get some extra $$$. Again, all hearsay as I have personally never been. Maybe someone can chime in because I would also like to know if the stories are true.

I would love to go to Cuba and experience their "fantastic" socialized medicine.

i've been...but i stayed with family and not in any of the tourist areas/vacation spots so i probably wouldn't be of much help... every pro you listed in your post is definitely accurate though. aim to stay at varadero or cayo coco.

I did some quick reading on this just prior to the thread and saw they don't accept US currency or credit cards. Did not know the currency was non-convertible though.

Even at all inclusive resorts, the food sucks compared to other Caribbean islands.

I think VICE had a short-film about a tourist's perspective of nightlife/women for hire.
The channel has too many uploads for me to find it quickly.

About 2/3 of all women have to engage in prostitution at some time in their life just to survive.

If it was so good, why do they risk their lives to leave the country and nobody risks their lives to enter it ?

Food aside, what's the cost like compared to other Caribbean Islands?

From what I was told, a week's visit would only be in the hundreds per person (not including flight).

For Canadians, among the cheapest.
I can only tell you in terms of the package deal though (airfare, resort, fuel taxes inc,)

You US guys can't take a direct flight because of the embargo between the two countries, so I imagine that will drive the price up.

Apparently financially reforms are going to end its two currency system:

Who's been to Cuba?

Does Guantanamo Bay Naval Station qualify? If so, been there a bunch. Didn't get to see much of the tourist stuff though.

I would love to go visit Cuba. Americans can now go there on special trips that have to be authorized by the State Department (I think).
