According to Michael Moore, great medical system. We see people from all over the world running to receive their medical care there.

You gotta go through some other country, can't fly direct from the US. My friend went through Mexico for a few reasons.

BofA and ScotiaBank are partners so its free to pull pesos out and you get the best rate. He always just asked the customs agent not to stamp his passport.

All my Canadian friends that flew direct loved it but they said it was kinda scary off the resort.

You can go direct from the US now, but you have to go through the proper avenues. They're called culture missions, or some such, and they are approved by the State Department or Treasury Department.

Seems like a giant PITA as opposed to just flying from a neighboring Caribbean country or something, just to get to go on a "missionary" trip.

get a flight via canada or any other country and change your $$$ in canadian dollars or euro because cuba has an extra fee for changing USD.

stay out of varadero, thats not cuba, its just a long beach with a shitload of all inclusive hotels. for a good experience, skip hotels and get a stay in a casa particular - these are private "hostels". Lonely Planet - Cuba will provide you with all the informations you need
and be warned, we've backpacked the country in two weeks and nearly everyone has $$$ in their eyes when they spot you. thats why prostitution is the easiest way to become a rich girl in cuba. we've met some estonian guys and they had a bunch of girls for fun...they were telling them that they want to be their girlfriends etc. .. you can "have" them a whole day, go to the beach, club, restaurant etc. and after all they ask you for money because they dont have any...

I've been. food is not very good in Cuba, but if you go to a higher end hotel the food is decent of course. My parents have been all over the Caribbean, and they go back to Cuba often because it's well priced. Beaches are nice, people are pretty friendly. Keep in mind, Canadians for the most part only go to all-inclusive resorts, (Cuba is one of the most popular vacation spots for Canadians) so it's not quite the "real" Cuba, but you can always take day-trips into the cities. Here's a popular site to book your vacation http://www.selloffvacations.com/

He's pay-for-banged 2/3 of them. So far.

And don't call him Shirley.

I hear this complaint a lot, but I've never had any issues. The last resort I went to even had a bakery. Every morning, there was freshly baked bread, numerous kinds of fresh fruit, and there was more fresh seafood than you could want.

If you're going to Cuba on a foodie tour, want Big Macs, or Kobe beef, yes, you may be disappointed- but the food isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Off the resorts, the food is fantastic, too.

Also, some of the best beaches I have ever seen.

Great beaches
Food at all inclusive is not that great compared to Mexico
Top shelf booze at the resort I stated at near Santa Clara including, no Smirnoff crap that you get in Cancun.
People are friendly but it takes forever to get anything done, they do things on Cuban time
Some real interesting architecture in the older towns
Way less people spoke English as compared to Mexico but they were all very friendly. If you are a tourist, they do see you as a walking money bag, same as anywhere poor.
