That's even lower than the Black Friday price from 2011 ($599, and that was considered a great deal)

You dun good, son

My local shop has them for $599 indefinitely (aka until the next panic). If anyone wants their info, I would be happy to refer them. $599 is a great price, I just happened to find it a bit cheaper

Pretty good deal that. I liked the ones recently that had colt 6920s for like $799 + shipping. Buy online, pay like $820 to get it to your FFL, $20-30 for transfer and bam, 6920 for $850

The cheapest option that is still worthwhile is the S&W M&P15 Sport @ $623. The next step up is a standard configuration S&W M&P15 in the $800ish price range. After that, it's up to the Colt 6920 and Sig M400 for the $1k price range.
This is all good.

Agree here. Seems you can't really go wrong with a 6920.

Surprisingly my dpms is still running strong, only had one ftf early on when using tulammo steel .223 but haven't had any problems since. Still very accurate. And everything seems to be holding together well. Even with frequent rapid fire.

Guess I got lucky with it, as I've heard a lot of people say its shit. That said still in process of building another upper. This ones just a beater/ for fun.

I found a M&P Sport 5.56 here in San Diego for $599, but it didn't come with a dust cover or forward assist.

Those are two things I can't live with, I'll have to pony up another $200 for one with those options.

Great Price.

Best I found local (through Gun Genie) is $615.

Can't beat it for the money.

Have you shot actual 5.56 spec ammo through it? Like Federal, Black Hills or Winchester?

DPMS is a 50% gun. There's a 50% chance you will get one that will run fine for normal use. Not high stress, but normal hobbyist and light training use. Then the other 50% fail at the first chance of stress.
With a DPMS, there are ways to ensure reliable operation after you buy them. A friend bought a DPMS in the post-Sandy Hook panic without talking to me first. We had some issues with the gun initially due to DPMS and their propensity for tolerance stacking. Once we got that issue resolved, I did some minor tweaks to increase durability and thus far it's been a usable rifle.

The goofy thing about DPMS is that their LR308 rifles are actually pretty decent for what they are. Definitely not KAC or JP quality, but still not terrible. I know why they have so many problems with their AR15 platform, but it's able to be solved by simply slowing down and increasing their quality control. Their current QC controls in place continue to fail, and their model for their QC is flawed. Could be a simple fix, but Freedom Group won't let them slow down. Pretty telling when you take into account how DPMS components are all from St. Cloud, MN, but the actual rifles are assembled in Ilion, NY at the Remington factory (and soon to be in the Huntsville, AL factory).

Really? $200 for a dust cover and forward assist?

And barrel. The M&P15 uses a gov't profile chrome-lined barrel. The Sport has a straight profile non-lined barrel.
The upper receiver is also likely no higher than Grade 3 quality, based on who else uses that design.

My bad, the upper on the Sport without the dust cover and forward assist is molded solid and simpler design, so the price is more than adding a couple of simpler features.

I'm also in California, so that means a bullet button, which probably adds slightly to the cost over a standard mag release.

My upper is dpms, lower is a custom spikes tactical/palmetto state build. In the process of building an upper but haven't had time/kinda forgot about it lately.

But I mostly shoot federal 5.56 I get in bulk. Or the occasional .223 here and there if I run out. Haven't noticed any stress related issues/wear. Im lucky I guess because I've heard the same things you were talking about.

That's said, I'm still grabbing my AK if I'm trusting my life to any gun for defense.

That M&P sport is a damn good gun. You will be very happy with it for what it is. Do not let anyone else tell you anything different. A few other makers are doing something similar like Bushmaster to make some light entry AR guns.

For me, I just picked up a used $75 Bushmaster A1 upper to mount to my poly lower I usually shoot with a 22LR upper as a nice, cheap backup and a BCG in NCB for $100
