Ok . So have a few options under 500$ . First i would recommend sony nex 3n it runs about 370$ . Its small and has great sensor and its great for sports also it does hd video at 60fps which is great for sports . 2nd one i would say canon t3i its slower than sony but a better quality and it runs about 450-500 with a kit lens . And 3rd would be nikon d3100 . It runs about 400-500$ .So final verdict, out of these 3 choices and based on ur description i would say go sony route . Its technology way ahead then canons and nikons . All tho I'm using canon only due to........I'm simply in love with their quality .

Thanks so much! I prefer sony so started looking for a NEX 3 and luckily ended up finding a NEX 5 (used of course) for $300. Can't wait to learn about it since I have very little experience with photography...

Big Thanks!!!
