Upgraded to the Eonon GM5150 from the D5150. First I must say I was pretty happy with the D5150 but I really liked the new UI Eonon did with the GM5150. After receiving the unit I noticed right away Eonon listened to our feedback and lengthened the RCA wires and included a 90 degree iPod cable. These two additions make the install way easier! The RCA wires on the original D5150 were 75mm and on the new GM5150 they are 140mm's. Also there is a small black pad underneath the unit, this is there for a reason do not remove. This actually helps keep the unit sitting more secure in the dash. Simple but effective solution.

The biggest differences I have noticed from the D5150 is the Orange LED's to match the BMW dash. The Bluetooth Mic works really good. I tested a call and it came in loud and clear, I even put my finger over the Mic hole on the unit and there was NO difference in the call quality! The new UI is the biggest thing I really like about the GM5150. Every screen was redesigned and looks so much better. Small tweaks like moving the dimming button to the far left instead of the center, easier to reach while driving. The remote control is a leap forward from the old one, way to go Eonon! The clock size was reduced and moved to the far left and can be turned off if desired.

Here are a few minor issues:
1- The clock won't keep correct time.
(Set to GPS sync and the correct time zone)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_Time_Zone
2- The unit goes to A2DP music streaming on most start ups.
(Turning Auto Connect Off Corrects this)

I experimented with three different radio antenna adapters to address the radio reception issue. The one that comes from Eonon works best without the Blue wire connected.
The adapter I had previously used with the D5150 was slightly better, the 40-EU10. The one I found that works the best and eliminated most of static and weak reception is 40-EU55 the. It's for 2002 and up BMW's with powered antennas and newer Facra style antennas and is approx $13.

Adapter is a Metra 40-EU55

http://www.amazon.com/Metra-40-EU55-...=Metra+40-EU55

Installing the 5150 requires a relocation bracket. This part cost approx $85 from ECSTuning. There are two different ones available depending on which button console you have. This part is needed for lowering the AC controls down below making room for the 5150 on top. When you relocate the heater / AC controls what you want is BMW part number 51167001410, ECS part ES#82727.

Here's more information about the differences between the two "single cutout" mounting brackets...

51167001410: Single cutout version w/ smoker's package
51167001408: Single cutout version non-smoker's package

The non-smokers package allows for easy installation of the front storage compartment 51168208369 and does not include the LED light. You can retrofit the compartment tray into a smokers unit but there's a little tab that needs to be cut out.

Cigarette lighter block off plug 51168222183.
Functionally either one will work but if you get the wrong one you will have a gap in the lower corners.

Some installation videos on how to take apart the dash and remove the Stereo, AC controls and Storage bin. Here is a helpful tip for removing the center vent, use two plastic cards (old credit cards/store membership cards) and slide them into the top left and right corners of the center vent. This will release both clips.

"How To Update the Firmware in the EONON 5150"
http://www.e46zone.com/forum/topic/4...mware-upgrade/

-Firmware updates-
There are two different ones to choose from:

This is the one my GM5150 is running, the firmware it came with.
BMW_APP_TW_4049-405F-0709-L146-131209

This is the latest firmware Carlos from Eonon released to address the Launch.exe error.
BMW_APP_TW_4049-405F-0709-L146-140219

Instructions:
1. Copy the folder of files to the SD card.
2. Turned key to position one and turned on head unit
3. Inserted SD card and left the Eonon head unit on.
Turned key off, waited 10 seconds, turned key back to position one and head unit powered back on and read the SD card.
4. It goes through about four steps, then restarts, please calibrate the touch screen per the instructions.
5. Remove the SD card and hit reset. If you forget to take out the SD card, it reloads again.

More Detailed:
1. Copy the NWD_703 folder in the firmware update to your GPS SD card (make a backup of your current GPS software and maps) now the only thing on you SD card should be the NWD_703 folder.
2. Turn unit on without sd card till it fully boots (dont worry if you are getting a launch.exe error right after starting your unit, this doesnt seem to effect it)
3. Turn the unit off but turning your key to the off position for 10 seconds
4. Place your sd card into the gps card slot and turn the key to the acc position. You should see a Eonon logo and the unit should start auto updating itself.
5. Once completed the unit will have you re-calibrate
6. After calibration go to settings and select the option just under GPS and select your language (settings wont look set until you hit the home button)
7. After confirming you have the correct language set, then turn your key to the off position again and take out the sd card (if you forget it will just do the process all over again)
8. Turn key back to the acc position and let the unit start fully.
9. Once the unit has started, find a sharp object and hit the restart button above the GPS card slot to further confirm no issues.
10. Load all your GPS software back onto the sd card and remove the NWD_703 folder.

-SETTINGS-
Time display: Display/undisplay time on top left of the screen.
Hand Brake: Switch on/off Brake detect.
Key Tone: Switch on/off key tone.
Rearview Startup: Turn on/off rearview camera.
Headlight Control:Turn on/off headlight control mode. Headlight on, the screen auto dimmer.
Navigation Mixing: Turn on/off navigation mixing mode.
Turn ON Mix Mode: Sound of GPS Navigation will be played with playing sound synchronously.
Turn OFF Mix Mode: When navigation sound on, the music of front speaker will stop, the rear speaker will stay on. After navigation sound stops, front speaker will continue to play music.
Mix Ratio: Set mix ratio of navigation soundwith music or radio.
Radio Region: User could select radio frequency from (Europe, South America, Japan, Taiwan and America). Frequency of broadcast status will run under corresponding frequency automatically once selected.
Reversing Video: on/off. Please turn off "reversing video function" if your car hasn't installed a rear view camera.

-Screen Info-
The small "Sun Icon" top left. Press it and it changes to "Half Moon" and the screen dims, press it again and the screen is turned off. Touch the screen or steering wheel controls to turn it back on.

Hi Gary, glad to hear that you have GM5150 installed already. thank you for your great support to Eonon. We appreciate your effect so much.

Yes, we have made improvement on GM5150. Thanks to the understanding of all your guys, and also give us chance to improve our product, that is why we can make more stable and powerful unit for better use! Thank you!

Regarding 2 issues you mentioned.
1- The clock won't keep correct time.
Have you turned on the GPS sync and also set it to the correct GPS time zone? Will it help you hold the time memory?
2- The unit goes to A2DP music streaming on most start ups.
Yes, D5150 with URC and also GM5150 designed in this way. It is not the product defective. But i have reflected it to R&D and they will collect more information, then decide whether will change it in the future.

Thank you again,Gary

No problem, glad to help out.

The clock issue I actually tried that but I will experiment with the time zones. These are very small quirks I can live with. I'm really impressed with the new UI and small changes that were made. The longer RCA wires and the 90 degree iPod cable made it so much easier to install. Thanks for listening to the feedback from you're customers and making these changes. The Bluetooth Mic seems to work good now also. I noticed the volume control is more stable and consistent than my D5150 was.

My main issue is the steering wheel functions, the button to answer the phone calls change the "equalizer mode" and the button to go to Bluetooth change the "mode"... there is any way to set it up properly?

I learned a few things after installing the backup camera today.
1. I can confirm that the radio reception is much better after disconnecting the blue wire from the Eonon supplied antenna adapter.

2. This camera seems to be working well, but it was definitely not easy to fit. Requires some creative Dremel work and double sided tape to get it to fit into hole left after removing the license plate light.
Waterproof 170°Night Vision Color Car Rear View Back Up Camera for BMW E39 E46 -$18.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

3. The wiring for the camera was pretty straight forward especially using the D5150 install tread as a guide as well as this thread for the wiring: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showpos...02&postcount=4

4. It was not necessary to connect the orange trigger wire from the back of the GM5150 into the blue/yellow wire behind the glove box (at least not with that camera getting power from the back up light in the trunk lid). This was a good thing because I could not figure out how to disconnect the wire box from above the fuse box.

5. Carlos sent me a software update that is supposed to fix the automatic A2DP on start-up issue. Haven't tried it yet. I have to get a new SD card first. Anyone confirmed that it works?

6. The clock will sync itself if you have the right timezone set and turn GPS Sync ON. Sometimes it take a minute, but it's no longer annoying.

7. Also I took the opportunity to trim down the antenna adapter while the unit was out. Don't know if they changed it from the D5150 or not, but a little trimming goes a long way towards getting the unit to fit flush.

Look in the settings menu, you can assign the steering wheel buttons. I haven't tried it yet but it has the option.

VKnid
Good to hear all went well!

I tried to use the GPS Sync and the correct time zone for my clock and it works most of the time. It does take a few minutes to sync up when you start the car. The time will change to the correct time. I've had mine still be off by 10-15 minutes a few times thou.

Did your backup camera have a Red wire running from the back to the front with the RCA wire? If so that's why you didn't need to hook up the trigger wire under the dash.

I was told that it would only work with the GM5150 with the new interface.

The manual says that the buttons can be programmed, but I haven't been able to get it to work. Don't know if anyone has for that matter. There are two orange wires labeled sw1 and sw2 (not the RCA wires for sub woofers) that may have something to do with programming, but I have no idea what they would connect to.

There was a red wire coming out of the camera with the yellow RCA, but it was only long enough to run to the reverse light not all the way to the front.

So you didn't have to even wire up the Orange "Back" wire for the camera and it works?

Yep. The only wire connected to the head unit is the yellow RCA into the green input cable. I was surprised it worked. The cool thing is that it will turn on as soon as I start the car and put it in reverse. You don't have to wait for the system to boot up.

WOLFN8TR Can you test an ipod and iphone if possible.

Does the unit charge the ipod and iphone now as apparently the D5150 didnt have enough power to charge and play devices. it only played them which means you can't leave a ipod permanently connected as you had to remove it to charge.

I have an old iPhone 3GS connected and it charges, it also charges my 4S. I tried my wife's 5S with the lightening adapter. It played, started charging, then tried to connect to bluetooth, and stopped charging. I also go a weird error message (with Chinese characters) and it kept restarting itself until I pressed the reset button. So I would think that any of the iPods or iPhones with the old 32 pin connector should work.

VKnid, I think I commented on your YouTube video yesterday and today under the name 'moleBRUV' (please don't ask, no idea why I chose that username :p). I'm worried about that comment above about the screen glare as I have a convertible and if you're having trouble seeing the screen in your coupe just under normal day light, that makes me worry about how easy it is to see in bright sunshine with the roof down (the OEM 16:9 navigation screen can easily be seen even if sunlight is blasted onto it as it uses transflective LCD technology).

mole51, you probably mean WOLFN8TR. He's got a coupe and did the above video. I have a sedan with untinted windows and the glare is pretty bad especially when the sun directly hits the dashboard. I imagine it would be nearly impossible to read in a convertible with the top down on a sunny day.

Sorry, I would have meant him (very tired atm with work). I suppose the glare isn't too big an issue because I know I won't be using the navigation app much as I always use my phone, and source, volume etc can be controlled with the hard buttons. But from the pictures I've seen it looks like its a fairly bright screen, so I presume you two only mean the screen is impossible to see when the sun directly hits the screen? Other than that it's okay under a normal slightly bright day?

I live in the UK and would have absolutely no second thoughts if I knew I was ordering from a UK supplier with decent and fast customer after-sales support, but from everything I've read their customer service sounds rubbish so I'm worried about. I presume as you've upgraded from the older Eonon units you guys see the support as pretty good?
