I hope I have some of that hanging around when the zombies come. I can throw a computer or a stereo at them and escape.

Congratulations.

Given your current age, you'll probably not have to worry about that day.

I don't view hyperinflation as impossible, just improbable. Many events would have to happen for hyperinflation to hit the US. Our debt would have to stop being bought, our economy would have to hit the dumps, etc.

Printing money in and of itself does nothing to influence inflation. Only once it is introduced into circulation can it have an effect. For that reason the printing presses cause little concern to me with regards to economic health.

Unlike many other countries, I don't think the US needs hyperinflation to suffer catastrophic damage. I think simply high inflation would be enough to cause serious damage. Time will tell.

I think it's a great asset class for a diversified investment portfolio....but, like anything else, having a high concentration in one asset class can seriously fvck an investors net worth.

I agree 100%, but only if we are talking about an investment. While gold/silver/copper, can be (and is) an investment, I personally don't treat it as such. My investments are Apple, BP, Citigroup, and a few others, but my gold I treat as a hedge. Even when gold was $2000 an ounce, I didn't actually make any more, since if I sold it, gas was far more expensive at the time, etc. Gold has come down, but so have the things I buy (property value, gas, etc.) I guess my point is that people always go "ZOMG look gold is $2000 an ounce or ZOMG gold fell to $1200"...that is all irrelevant and arbitrary for those that are not investing...the dollar value is irrelevant for someone like myself, but the "what can it buy" aspect is what matters. When silver was $40 (I rounded it up for easier math) and gas was $5, a silver eagle bought 4 gallons of gas. Now silver is at $20, and gas is (by me, $3.05 yesterday...lets call it $3) so I can still buy the same 4 gallons (even a little more)...so if we remove the dollar figure, I didn't lose any money. I always laugh when friends of mine say "ZOMG, I lost so much money on my house." I ask him, are you moving? He says no. I ask is he selling the house? He says no. I ask him if he got a new car this year? He says yes. So I ask him WTF did he lose...its all made up paper to me. Money isn't made or lost until it's cashed out IMHO.
