Need Advise PLEASE

Hey guys,
So I've recently been involved in a fairly serious dilemna and I'm hoping somebody can help me. I'll be as brief as possible.

About 2 weeks ago, some friends and I were hanging out and decided to go to a buddy's apartment complex to play pool in their clubhouse. Everything was fine until one of the kids we were with got too drunk and ended up breaking a flower pot and spilling drinks. We cleaned up the best we could and explained everything the next day when we were questioned about the incident. At first, the apartment leasing office wanted to charge $200 which was no big deal, I went ahead and paid it. Well today that changed to over $700 for a new flower pot (one way more intricate and expensive than the one that got broken, of course) and cleaning of the clubhouse. They charged us for cleaning the entire clubhouse even though we were only in the small billiards area, and they obviously overcharged for the flower pot due to their opportunity of getting a nicer one since we had broken the old one.

They also filed a police report and are giving us 2 weeks to come up with the money before the police take things into their own hands. My problem is, I dont have enough money to cover the damages and nobody else is willing to pay. So its going to come back on all of us, myself included, if I cant come up with the money. They have the whole night recorded on the security cameras and they know who the tenant involved is because they use a key card system that scans each tenants' key upon entry, which tells them who's accessing the room at all times.

I dont know what to do; I cant afford what they're charging, and I don't want to be arrested or have to go to court for something like this unless I can get it resolved in my favor. Does anyone have any suggestions? Other than get wiser friends of course.

Its a civil case not criminal

Cops will laugh
You should've written out a release for damages before paying the 200 dollars
Otherwise they are going to keep trying to bleed you.

You get a receipt for the 200? Anything in writing/email stating that 200 was what was requested to make them whole?

I'd tell them to pound sand
Why are you paying? Forward the bills to the kid that caused the damages and tell the landlord it wasn't you

Seriously I don't know why you put any money forward anyway, it's not your apartment complex. I would have just chipped in my share. 10 people there? sure I'll give my buddy that rents there $20.

Sounds like you have deadbeat friends and you should get new friends.

Also sounds like your buddy lives in a place run by shady people.

But yes I agree with JJ, cops will laugh and the mgmt can pound sand.

It was an accident, not vandalism. Unless they have you on video purposefully spray painting the walls or something, you're fine.

Tell them to pound sand.

damn what kind of flower pot costs $700? send the bill to the dude who caused the damage. why are you putting yourself forward if you didn't do it? your friends need to man up and take responsibility, that is just shady

If you have a receipt for the $200 you paid then this'll be a breeze. If you don't have the receipt then it's your word against theirs (unless you have witnesses).

The cops will say it's a civil case and you will get subpoenaed to go to court (assuming the management presses charges). In the court you can show your evidence of the $200 paid, bring your witnesses, etc.. The case will get thrown out and your done.

You should get a lawyer if they press charges and then counter-sue them for attempted fraud.

Cops will laugh, tell management to pound sand.

Like everyone has said here tell them to pound sand.

It was a clear mistake and you guys made a solid effort to make things better. Tell them to take you to court, it won't be worth their time after lawyer fees and having to pay someone to go to the house and etc. cops will laugh at them and probably tell them to pound sand too.

This is why I use plastic and write checks. Cash is used for casinos, sometimes tips, and a small emergency stash.

I'm sorry but that made absolutely no sense what so ever.

Good point, my apologies. I was in a hurry last night and wasnt putting sufficient effort into my spelling, which is rare.

Thanks for all the opinions guys, I'm heading over there today to get it all straightened out and I'm definitely not spending $700 or however much they say they want. I may or may not tell them to "pound sand" haha that will just depend on my mood.

And if they truly want to go to court about something so petty, I guess I'll just dedicate my immediate future to making sure they spend well over what they want from me, in legal fees. And if they really bother me perhaps I can put them in the seat of a social host, since the alcohol was in the clubhouse refrigerator; easily accessible to the minor who drank it. And it was on their premises which isn't owned by the members of the club (tenants), like most clubhouses, its actually owned by the leasing company itself.

So, I'm pretty sure that I would be able to make that stick if I needed to. I'm hoping that after I meet with management today and reiterate the possible outcomes of going to court, given the circumstances, they will just give up and take my $200, and call it a day. Then they can go pound sand lol thanks again guys
