Joe Biden likens LaGuardia to ‘3rd world’, pushes for High Speed Rail

http://www.politico.com/story/2014/0...rk-103228.html

Quote:
No time zone was safe from the zingers of Vice President Joe Biden, whose well-known comedy was on full display during his remarks Thursday at Philadelphia's 30th Street Train Station, even making a crack at his own expense.

While speaking about the need for developing U.S. infrastructure at an event unveiling Amtrak's electric locomotive that will be used in the Northeast Corridor, Biden took a jab at the subsidies being used for airline expansion.

"It's not wrong, they should have air travel, but the last thing I need from a guy from Bemidji, [Minn.] is telling me why are we subsidizing railroad and the busiest corridor in the world," Biden said.

Biden cited his own extensive travel as vice president and his noted use of Amtrak as a Delaware senator, but said U.S. airports left much to be desired, specifically LaGuardia Airport.

"If I blindfolded someone and took him at 2 o'clock in the morning into the airport in Hong Kong and said, Where do you think you are?' he'd say, 'This must be America, it's a modern airport,'" Biden said. "If I took him blindfolded and took you to LaGuardia Airport in New York, you must think, 'I must be in some Third World country.' I'm not joking!"

The vice president also lamented the recent rankings of the U.S. on its infrastructure quality, saying the country has fallen 20 spots in the past decade on the World Economic Forum's ranking.

"It's embarrassing. And it's stupid. It's stupid. That puts us literally behind - they rank us behind Barbados. Great country. One airport," Biden quipped.

However, he said he remains optimistic about the future of the nation's infrastructure and acknowledged his role as "the White House optimist."

"I used to be talked about as the young idealistic guy who was optimistic, and they now write about me as the White House optimist. As if I'm the guy [who], as my my grandfather form Scranton would say, 'just fell off the turnip truck yesterday,'" the vice president said.
LaGuardia is pretty sad for an airport in a major city.

I've been to Sydney, Auckland, Tokyo, and Zurich and those are some awesome airports.

In all fairness, Detroit and Dallas have some very nice airports but the bigger issue is that NO we aren't investing in infrastructure like we should. As long as the Kenyan is at 1600 Penn Ave nothing will be done because of congress disdain for him.

I didn't pick up on that one. No wonder the tea party wants to get rid of him.

We agree, LaGuardia is a joke of an airport, but I would venture to say that the TSA makes all US airports feel like 3rd world countries. My last flight (3 weeks ago) to St. Martin out of JFK was simply laughable. (The process I should say, the flight itself was fine.)

We've been down the TSA route before, but it's funny how polar opposite we are with our TSA experiences, lol.

I travel often (at LEAST 1x a month) for work or pleasure and have pretty benign experiences with the TSA. I think I've had 2 or 3 negative experiences with them.

Ive had 3 PERSONAL experiences with the TSA, and all my flights but one were a disaster in a general sense. Huge lines, insane waits at passport control, often rude powertrippy agents, etc. I can't really say its a NY thing because I wasn't happy in Miami, Vegas, Aruba, Denver, or Calgary either.

Good ol' Biden, pushing for more government spending with money we don't have. It's like a spoiled 16 year old girl going to the mall with daddy's credit card.

Here's a thought...let Airlines build their own airports, with their own security. No cost to the taxpayer. The feds/state governments can aid in the construction by providing the airlines free land.

Nope, sorry. No privatization whatsoever. Let's continue to flame the big corporations by talking about their huge profits and then giving them handouts. That's the American way!

Airlines willing to fork out the money to build a state of the art airport? Ain't gonna happen. Ticket prices would SKYROCKET.

That's like asking an owner of a Pro Team to build his own stadium.

Interesting you say that because last I checked, poor people don't fly on airplanes. So now, you are advocating the use of taxpayer dollars to make airfare cheaper for the rich.

A buddy of mine owns a bunch of food stores inside NYC airports. According to him, airports are rackets. The airlines would clean up. The reason why (I believe) this is not happening is because the state/city officials dont want to lose their golden goose. Airlines already pay a very large portion of terminal construction (their own home base terminals).

Check to see who he leases his apartment from and you'll understand why he looks like an oompah loompah.

i've never had a problem with TSA either.

I suspect that my shitty attitude has something to do with it.
