2003 325xi rack and pinion replacement!

My rack and pinion is leaking pretty bad on my 325xi, so I was wondering if I can replace it with a rack and pinion from an e46 non-awd.

I just purchased a new steering rack for my 330xi. Apparently they are different, but I don't know definitively that you couldn't use one off of a rear wheel drive. Considering the unknown engineering that goes into these components, I wouldn't use the wrong part on any BMW system unless you enjoy doing thing twice

They are different. Get one from rack doctor. Are you sure the rack itself is leaking or could it be one of the hoses?

Yeah but I got one for about $100 less from parts geek. And I'm sure the rack was bad, a BMW tech told me!

^ That means nothing to me. Unless the BMW tech showed me the leak and I confirmed it myself I'd be suspicious. If a BMW tech told you that you need a new engine would you do it without more research?

I payed $200... I wouldn't recommend other people go this route, but I found one at a local auto recycler and I wanted to swap it out the weekend I bought the car. Also, I was able to inspect it beforehand, otherwise I wouldn't have considered it... even then, its a gamble and I may be throwing $200 to the wind. I consider it cheap entertainment. Rack doctor really is the way to go and if I have to replace this again that's definitely the route I'm going. A rebuilt rack will set you back a little over $300 on the XI and it includes a lifetime warranty (can't beat that!)

I got the dad gum thing out. Boy what a pain. Had to drop the frame a bit. Loosened the two front bolts and two rear bolts, use jack to lower also had to remove 4 bolts on the sway bar I believe on the very front part of the frame. That gave me the clearance I needed to do the job. Took me about 6 hrs to figure everything out. Know just needs an alignment. I don't know why I got this xi. Everythings more expensive and a little harder with the xi. Anybody need help with there's let me know.

Think about replacing those four subframe bolts. Definitely torque them properly.

You wouldn't happen to know the torque specific on those bolts. Thanks I will look into that. I wonder where's a good place to find some other than BMW.

Got an alignment at firestone yesterday. The guy talked about me so bad. He said who ever did it didn't even try to match the new rods with the old ones, which really wasn't true. I worked like heck to getting it close to the before even counting threads and using chalk. I think he really just wanted a reason to charge me double $129. My response was, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. That being said new rack$ 225 ,new tie rods out and inner $80 in, no leaking, handles a bit better, and very we'll aligned now. I'm very pleased. No more immediate issues as of now, except rear rotors and pads bit that's elementary. Keeping my fingers crossed. I in about $3500 on this car and still pleased at this point.
