Not sure but I was under the impression that they are pretty well married together in the car.

YES! This is the info I don't have. The actual/physical swap should be the easy part. The hard part is going to be getting everything to align and be best friends.

I'll be using the M3 cluster, DME, engine harness. I believe the 330xi transmission harness is different, so I'll be using that. I'm not sure about the traction control, but honestly I don't really care. I always turn it off anyway. If it's an issue, I'll likely just turn it off permanently. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. I'm sorry in advance if I don't end up answering the question of how to get this option to remain.

The traction control is never really off though, it just switches to a less intrusive mode. When you hit the off button it'll stop fixing your sliding/spinning issue and will switch to helping you go faster. Without the system, the car would burn out one wheel and go very slowly, especially with the S54 in there.

Really? Sounds like I need an LSD rear after all. Put that on the to-do list.

Yes, all the diffs are open so you could in theory have a one wheel drive car if you had enough power to the ground. Custom LSD looks like it'll be in your future, either that or figure out how to marry the Xi traction control system to the M3 DME...

An LSD will help, but you'll still have an open transfer case and front diff. Scroll through this document for the explanation of the 2wd system vs the XI system:

I suggest trying the DSC (ADB-X) with the S54 while adding an LSD in the rear, that would be the ultimate combo.

The link is not working for me. Is it just me?

This was my understanding on these tcases though: "The gearing provides a permanent 38%F / 62%R torque split (discussed below) between the front and rear drive shafts."

source: http://www.xiftw.com/?page_id=16

Edit:

I see.. due to the planetary gear set, that is the "open" aspect.

Not that you don't have enough work ahead of you but I noticed you swapped a set of 330 front brakes in, good mod...you know the rears will bolt up too right? Only when putting them on an Xi because of our emergency brake configuration. I bought a set of front and rear calipers for a 330(not even Xi) and bolted them up with some new calipers and pads. Since you already have a doner car, easy peasy. I'm really looking forward to seeing your oil pan. Good luck!

Sorry, the link should work now.
Also, here's a video of the TC to demonstrate operation:

In the back of my head, I knew this. Just didn't really think it would be a problem. (Now I kinda do) Makes me want to put a New Process tcase in there!

Meaning that the NV124 is made by New Process? Yes. Sorry for not being clear that I meant a truck NP tcase.

My first love was lifted/mud trucks. That got too radical and I couldn't drive them on the street anymore. These cars allow me to have fun at the track, but also enjoy them to/from work.

I'm rebuilding the 6spd shifter, and I've run into my first (of many, I am sure) obstacle. I ordered OEM parts, but it appears the shifter rod joint is aftermarket. Is the rod going to be different too? (ie Is this a short shift kit?)

Also, got some proper wheels/tires on the car.

Oddly enough, the previous owner had 7.5s and 8.5s with 245's all around. I have another set on a different car. Might just use 8.5s w/255s all around. We'll see.

So you aren't sure what you will run yet? I was just curious if you will use a staggered set.

I went to mate the S54 and 6spd 330xi transmission, and guess what. The splines on the transmission input shaft are not compatible with the S54 clutch disc

Anyone see why the 240mm clutch disc from the 330xi won't work with the 240mm S54 Flywheel/Pressure Plate?
