I don't see myself owning anytime soon, but it was enough to plant the bug. I'm definitely interested in some formal training.

OK, so I've spent the past 2 days obsessing over the whole experience. I'm researching training courses (mostly safety/intro courses - even online ones), appropriate eye protection (I need it to go over-prescription-glasses), the various pistols I'd likely be shooting at the range, ammo costs, etc...

Considering that at no time in the immediate future would I be looking to have a gun at home (not that I'm against it in any way), the only use would be at a range. So, my plan is to rent/borrow/share until I'm either past the obsession or ready to commit to owning something.

I suspect that it will be a while before I can discern what I like and dislike about any pistol, but I'd like to stick with one model per caliber for a while. Totally open to suggestions about any of the above (primarily because of my obsessive need to learn about this).

Read some of the stickies at the top of the page, then ask any additional questions that you may have.

You need to answer these questions:

Semi-auto or revolver?
Full size, compact, sub-compact?
Caliber (45, 40, 357, 9 or something else)?
Rails or no rails (for attaching lights and lasers)?
Style of grip (Glock or anything else)?
Modibility???
Price range?
Polymer or solid metal?

Answer those and we can "recommend" you a list of guns. JMO.

Don't hold off. Just buy a Glock 19 to get started.

A few more days elapsed, still obsessed. To answer some of the above -

I read through the handgun sticky makes total sense, and will continue reading. Thanks to all for those comprehensive pieces!

Speaking with a number of friends who own/shoot, virtually all have suggested I begin paperwork for an ID, even if I'm not considering buying yet. I probably will do this.

As far as other preferences: semi auto, probably a compact, I don't have any grip preference yet, and I think it would definitely be a 9mm. It would be range only for sure.

I still plan on renting/sharing for the next several outings. I'm sure it will soon be a strong desire to own so I know everything about the weapon I'm firing (akin to scuba diving - rent only non-life essential equip if possible).

If the point is to learn.. By a 22. A good one. I like the Browning Buckmark target.
If you spend time learning how to shoot first, then go off on the other stuff its way more fun..
Lots of guys buy the "fun" guns before they learn how to actually shoot.
A buckmark will shoot that little dime sized circle if your good with it.
Lots of bad habits are learned by going with a big gun too early.

With a 22 you can do 1000 rounds a day and not flinch, no centerfire allows that when your learning
except for a .25 auto which costs way more to shoot.

Work on:
1. Safety
2. Skills (Sights, Trigger, Squeeze repeat.)
3. Find a shooting sport thats fun and that does not require a race gun to shoot.

You have the right track going with a 9mm and semi-automatic. Keep doing research, and shoot rental guns until you find something that you like.
