Might buy an M5 Update

So after much thought and consideration I did not buy an M5. I was considering a 2005 with 90k miles and bad accident history for $19000. Interlagos blue. After some insults and advice on my last thread I asked my friend that owns a silver E46 M3 if I could take it for a spin since I have never driven one. I really have wanted a 6 spd, I settled for my 330ci because I needed a car and it was a great price even though it was an automatic.

So long story short, I was driving it, asked him if he would consider selling. He said he had actually listed it on Ebay but the guy didn't pay. So I bought it from him the next day.

So I finally own an M3

Feels great, and Yes the M5 idea was stupid. I already started to order some things to clean it up like LED tails. It has 19 inch CSL Dinan exhaust and intake. Check it out.

That's a very, very rare M5. I think the first year for the e60 M5 was '06. Where you looking at an e39?

I'm pretty sure that would be an e60 m5.

The e39 M5's ceased production in 2003 when the regular e60's started rolling off the production line because the e39's was on the same production line as the regular e39's

I would avoid the e60 platform. I had a 545i and that car drained enough cash from my wallet in one year as me whole e46 cost.

Eventually I just cut my losses.

Good call on the m3.

Yeah I am so pumped to finally own one. I loved my 330ci so much and it was auto, and I just thought to own a faster, better, 6 speed version would be insane. I am getting the license plates tomorrow and then I finally drive it regularly

Great choice. Far better looking car, and just amazing all around. The e60 5 series is my least favorite car bmw ever made

Great decision! The e60 m5 is a pia to work on. I don't think that v10 install was well thought out. You have to really want that 500+hp to make it acceptable to live with on a daily basis.

See that's what we're here for! Good choice. Now you'll only lose an M3 in the divorce.

The e60, CAN be a beautiful car. The problem with the e60 was it had the reliability of ... well ... saying "reliable" and e60 in the same sentence is a tad hard. At this age, you can get 7-10 months of out an e60 without it throwing a code, or needing $1200 in labor to replace a $3 seal. Preventative maintenance can improve the reliability of the e60 marginally, but the higher power e60s need a constant flow of replacement parts from 80k onwards.

The e46 is a much more reliable platform, and from my family's experience with a 7 series and a x5 I am beginning to come to the conclusion that the e46's reliability is in-spite of BMW than designed to be so. It was just a random collection of parts that happened to work out well.

That being said, I firmly believe the e46 will fall into the place of the e30 where it is a timeless look, and can easily be DD cars up to 300k without anything catastrophic failing -- save stuff that would wear out on any car.
