Differential help!

Hi guys,

I need a bit of help regarding diffs. From what I understand the following should be correct:
320/323/325/328 Are the same
330ci are different to the rest
M3 is different to the rest
318? This is what I'm not sure on. They look like any other smaller 6cyl e46. Can anyone comment?

Purely needing just the info to sorce diff gears haha

Thanks in advance, Alex.

No idea, but wouldn't mind knowing what and where you get your gears from

I'm assuming e30/36/46 will be very very similar but I have to just get a set and check over them. If this is the case. E30/36/46/34/39 will be all the same

What I can tell you having sourced a new diff and gears for my E30 is that there are 3 size casings - small, medium and large.

The size of the case is dictated by the diameter of the ring gear.

Large = 210mm
Medium = 188mm
Small = 168mm

The medium case diffs were used in for example the 6 cyl E30 cars.

E46 is a large case diff and is different to all the other diffs in relation to how it bolts to the rear subframe - at two points instead of one.

Hope this is of some assistance.

Tim.

Thank Tim! I had to the the same in both my e30 and e36 just e46 seem to be funny. I've got a 318i diff with 3.9:1 at my availability if I need it, so I might see if those gears are the same as the 328. I know 330 are bigger and so are m3. Working of that I would only assume that the 330 is 188mm and the m3 is 210mm

E46 M3 is 210mm ring gear diameter. Large case diff - different input flange and mounting points etc.

BMW kept diffs pretty consistent from the late 70s to the mid 2000s

In recent times BMW have added to that with the 188k, 215 and 215k diffs.
188k comes in two flavours <= 3.07 and >= 3.15

All non M e46 six cylinders should have 188k diffs.

Comprehensive list found here:

BMW certainly are making things complicated for us!

As for gearsets you're probably best looking into e46 non M, e39 6 cylinders, e90 non M, e60 6 cylinders.
Good luck!

So e30/34/36/39/46 6cyls are all the same for gears. I'll be getting a e34 diff in the next coming weeks to try and do the swap. I will be running a OS giken center. This shouldn't matter I would think.

I think you're spot on with that.

No 188 and 188k are physically different.
e34 (non v8 and non M) are 188 so it won't fit.

It's just the centres are different? All I end is the hearing, shouldn't the gears be the same just centre to the carrier?
