(ALMOST) Time for a new car!

It is time I find a replacement for my old e46. As some may know, it caught fire late 2012 and insurance paid me well. I was hesitant on acquiring a new car as I thought I would be in NYC after college(Did not make sense to buy a car that would depreciate when the money could be put to better use). Turns out I most likely will be located in Atlanta and will call for a car.

I'm looking for make the purchase July - August but it may happen sooner if the opportunity presents itself.

Price Range: $17k Max

I was hoping I could come off a z4 Coupe(not roadster) but those are too rare/high for my price.

I've pretty much narrowed it down to the typical; E46 M3 or E92.

Any other suggestions ?

The newer the car you can get in your price range, the better off you will be. Of course, with BMW and a $17,000 budget, find a car for $14,000 and invest $3,000 in cooling system and suspension restoration.

Sounds idea. I'm starting the hunt soon. I've notice a lot of early 335i around 16,000.

I think I'm set on the e92 335i. As much as I love the e46 body style, I'm looking for something more current.

What are some things I should look out for besides the turbos and hpfp on the 335i?

I'll check it out. The 135i is a little childish to me. If I got a 135i I'd beat it around for a year then try to get an e92 m3

Well many of my friends have advised to me to get a 335 coupe because it has more room compared to the 1 series but don't know why it seems the 135 has more aftermarket options than the 3 series

The 135/335/535 decision is really hard for other people to throw in their own advise. The cars are so similar that it really comes down to what you personally prefer.
The 135 is going to be slightly more nimble than a 335, but you also lose some of the size and comfort. I looked at a 335i sedan and 535i before deciding to purchase my 08 535i sport. For me, it came down to the fact that I wanted a large luxury car that was still very quick and agile.
The 535i had the perfect balance of comfort, luxury, and sportiness that I was looking for. I never even considered a 135 because it is simply too small for my taste and there was no way I was settling with a 2 door.

You can also consider the way each car looks. I really wanted a 335i because I think it looks better than a 535i, but the added comfort of the 535 was enough to sway me that direction. Personally, I think the 135i is the worst looking car out of the 135/335/535.
Then again, looks are just one persons opinion. So for every person who thinks the 135i looks bad, there is another who thinks its by far the best looking.

Test drive the 135/335 and see which one fits your taste. There is a good chance you can find both on 1 lot.
If you like the 335i better, try out a 535i too. No reason to not test them all to find the absolute best fit.
Oh and 1 last recommendation: Whichever car you decide is right for you, GET IT WITH THE SPORT PACKAGE!

I would look at e34 m5s.... but those might be a bit to old for your taste (and pricey on maintenance)
e39 m5 would be a good consideration if you had a some more money so that you could have a decent example and set some money aside for maintenance

Also have you looked at brands besides BMW?
