Living around Washington DC?

Thinking about accepting a job offer/promotion there. Give me the good/bad/ugly.

Trying to stay inside the beltway if I can afford it, the rental prices seem surreal.....

Bar selection is great. Food selection is great. Lots of young professionals and attractive single women.

roads are complete shite.

I'm living outside the beltway and pretty happy w/ my decision.... but I'm a cheap single guy and enjoy the extra money I'm pocketing. Not to mention, I only travel into DC for work ~2x/wk + every so often on the weekends, so I take full advantage of the metro.

inside the beltway doesn't really narrow it down. Where is the job and where are you planning to live?

Job is pretty much all over dc area, looking to live in Alexandria, Annandale etc. Good schools are critical.

if schools are critical, stick to fairfax county.

This. I was in Old Town Alexandria and loved it. People were meh, girls were snobs despite the ratio being in our favor. They were lesbians, I tell ya.

The further out u go on Duke St, deeper into Alexandria, you can get some really cheap rentals and good deals. Not sure about schools though.

Live somewhere that will take you 15 mins to get to work even in rush hour traffic and ur life will be a lot easier.

Like everyone else, I'll say stick to FFX County (that's where I am). How old are your kids?

I'm assuming this means you're married, which changes the recommendations. For a young, single guy I would say Arlington/Clarendon. For a married guy with kids, I would say Fairfax, Reston, Herndon, Sterling, etc.

I am married with two young kids, one will be entering kindergarten in August and the other will be 3 in August.

We are trying to plan to be in the area for 3 years without having to move again after the initial move, which is why schools are so important.

Thanks for the tips so far!

FfX has a huge budget but I doubt that equates to great schools I doubt that . Prince William County is great !

Schools in Alexandria seem to have the highest rating inside the beltway, so that is the direction we are leaning towards. I'm still trying to mentally cope with the fact I'm about to be spending almost 30k a year after taxes on rent alone....

Huge kicker is most of these places don't even have garages, how am I going to afford to keep the bimmer running? Ha.

I spent a week there last summer. Nice city, plenty of culture and history, but not driving friendly at all.

There's also Rockville, MD, which is about 30min outside of DC without traffic. Very nice, mellow, town.

and it'll take you two hours to get to Alexandria for work in the morning.

OP, it's really easy to commute in to the area, and rental costs sharply decline when you start getting away from the city.

$30k???? U want to rent a detached house or something? Yeah, no covered garage is a problem, unless u get a townhouse. There should be some cheap ones scattered about along Beauregard St (I used to stomp around there near Clyde's).

It's really easy to spend $2500 a month on an apartment inside the beltway
