The 3 bed 2 bath places I'm finding in decent school districts are around 2400.00 a month...I'd love to find something cheaper trust me.

Not necessarily looking for a detached house but mainly interested in town houses or condos.

Looking at the great schools rating listed on zillow for the specific rental listing, should I be looking at something different?

I edited my post.

I think I got confused.

Are you looking at high schools? If so, school in Alexandria is rated highest. So you're correct.

Right now only looking at elementary schools. I just started looking into falls church right now as well, thoughts on that?

I lived in falls church for a little while. It's definitely pretty centrally located. But it's pricey.

Down the street from me there's a house for rent, owner is asking $1500 a month iirc. Corner lot with fenced yard. Great elementary school a quarter mile away.

West Falls Church is nice - near Tysons Corner and McLean.

It's probably the same size as our house, about 2200 sq ft. I live in Fredericksburg. I've got an hour commute on the train. So yes, it takes longer to get to work, but we have a nice house in a nice family friendly neighborhood.

Damn. Commuting to Crystal City from the 'Berg.

I thought you lived in Alexandria for some reason.

when I had to drive every day, it was pretty miserable. But at least I had a company car to drive then. Taking the train is great. I usually get an hour-long nap in for the morning ride.

Falls Church is the closest I've lived to Alexandria. And it wasn't the nice side. $1200/month for a sh!tty one bedroom apartment I shared with several roach families.

If I were single I'd probably bite the bullet and live further up north. Lots more for singles to do up there.

I live down in Stafford. Commuting options are VRE (train) vanpool, commuter bus, picking up or being a "slug" (I'm the latter x5 years-- check slug-lines.com). Housing prices are more realistic and the schools are good. Worth exploring.

I should have put into the original post that commuting via mass transport is not really an option , at least regularly. I'll be one of the shmucks stuck driving into dc most days...

you can live south and pick up slugs at the commuter lots. Slugs are people who ride with you so you can take HOV lanes.

I've never done the slug thing, so I can't confirm. There's a guy in my office (at least one. I know there's probably a ton of them) that I talk to regularly who slugs. He says there are three cars that he doesn't ride with anymore because the drivers are crazy. Other than that, I've never heard of a problem.

Just pay for using the HOV Express lanes and ride solo.

the only way to pay for the HOV lanes on I95 is with an increasingly expensive ticket

I hate how I-66 is HOV only during peak hours. I mean, come on, it's like THE major artery going into and out of DC, other than Rte 50.
