Today I read a story about a guy who helped stop a mass-shooting in the making at a university in Seattle via pepper spray.

Guns rights activists are using it to state that guns would have been more effective than pepper spray at stopping the shooting.

"An as-yet unidentified school shooter attacked Reynolds High School in Portland Oregon today, killing at least one student. It was the 74th school shooting since Adam Lanza's infamous assault on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut — and, as this map shows, they've happened all over the country."

Maybe we were better off when everyone didn't get a medal?

Everyone should get a gun instead.

And if add up all the deaths... It's 74. An average of 1 every shooting. Ironically, not all are students killing students. Some are husbands shooing their wives on school property and killing themselves later, others were knife wielding men getting killed by police. The shooting was literally the police reaction. One was an attempted murder of a campus guard, who opened fire on the suspect, but no one was killed.

Seriously, going through the list, there are more suicides, and "someone pulled a gun in a fight" than there are actual school shootings. What seems to be a 50/50 split in shootings in a school for the reason of killing students, and the other half is unfortunate shootings on, in and around school property. The La Salle one was not a student, nor was it on the school property.

Let's pump the numbers up to make it seem like something sinister is going on.

If you want real numbers and real tragedy... Look here:

Do you think the frequency hasn't increased at all?

Do you think that the media "glamorization" through tons of coverage about the shooters might have an impact on young, troubled kids?

That is not the point. If you read the list (I know, wiki and all that jazz)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._United_States

You will see that while it clearly shows more and more after Lanza's record breaking run, the majority are not Columbine/Sandy Hook style shootings. Some are, and it is terrible, but a 12 year old charged with shooting a girl with a BB gun is not a school shooting. Neither is the Police shooing a man with a knife, nor is a teacher committing suicide in his classroom after hours.

The list is compelling, but I found many more shootings that happened on or near school property than actual school shootings.

I'm sure that's possible.

I'd be interested, then, to see the number of legitimate, for lack of a better word, school shootings. And if you think I'm going through that list to count them, you cray.

Arrow

If a particular chain of banks didn't have alarms or armed guards and every time one was robbed we blasted it all over TV... Where do you think the next bank robbery would happen?

Schools are soft targets. We broadcast that everywhere. These shooters are cowards as proven by their actions and suicides.

Soft targets. That's where they go. Malls just the same.
What would happen if someone tried to cause harm at a courthouse? Oh yea...

74 in how many years? Chicago had 32 shootings just THIS WEEKEND

LOL

I am starting to get worried about this though, and that's coming from an ardent supporter of the second amendment. I don't know what the solution is though. I think that's everyone's problem.

Make guns available to anyone, no questions asked. Duh. It's the only solution.

By my count, 13 of these would qualify as a real school shooting. Of the 13, only 3 are real reportable national news headlines.

The others are students getting shot in or around the school, most gang or drug related, or suicides which do not count if the only shot fired was in their own heads.

Gun used by good guys against bad guys to save a child. Chalk this one up as one example.
