Question Anyone ever "junked" a car?

I've got a 2000 Ford Ranger with problems more expensive to fix than the vehicle is worth. It's currently at a shop about an hour and a half away. It's drivable, but I'd have to top-off oil every hour or so.

my options are

a) try to sell it to the shop
b) drive out, take the stereo and subwoofer out and call a service to "junk" it (figure I'll get ~$400)
c) limp it back home and part out a few pieces (tool-box, wheels/tires), take out stereo and subwoofer, and then sell it on CL as a non-drivable vehicle.

I don't know what I could get for the stereo on ebay (it's a double-din so I have no use for it), but I def want the sub for the new DD.

Take it home, get anything of value out of it and then call a junkyard or metal recycler to come get it.

I'd take it back home and maybe try to part it out on a ford forum. Then junk whatever's left.

I had a 96' 850R that became a huge money pit so I parted it and got more than I would of selling it as a complete. People bought most of it and I was basically left with the shell and a bare motor. Threw it up on some dolleys and rolled it out for the tow truck.

Depends on how much hassle you want to go through. If it were me, just take whatever you want out of it and have the junk people pick it up from where it's at now.

(d) donate it for maximum tax write-off, which will probably be more than the car is really worth.

pull-a-parts will usually give about $300 for a vehicle

My brother just sold his 95 Ranger with 200k miles and a blown head gasket on CL in 12 hours for $1100. He had 3 people driving to get it at the same time.

Put it on CL as a driveable car that needs major work. You might be surprised the market.

Is this the same ranger that you drove to my house to buy my old shitty weight bench and then made sexual advances towards me?

This.

However, you gotta check in advance what you're allowed to do. There are situations (states?) when you can only deduct the market value of the car (which would be low in your case) and others when you can deduct the KBB of the car (which in your case would be mo' bettah).

I think donation is great. Just make sure in advance what you're going to be able to deduct when you're making the $s part of the decision.
