330 ci Convertible with ZHP package

Bought this car April of 2013. Love it! Have an issue with the wiring of one of my headlights (Left). The insulation is chipping/peeling off all the way to the copper on the adaptive headlight harness. Tried taping the wiring in the car, but light still won't work. Finally removed entire unit from front end to work on in the house. Impossible to do anything while in the car! Germans must have tiny little hands is all I've got to say! " :-)

Anyway, is the brittle wiring a common issue with this car? the Rt side headlight has some cracking of the insulation, but not to the same extent as the left. I did, however, manage to break the left-to-right motion of the Rt side light while trying to change the bulb-----again, because there is not enought space to work. Bulbs are $100 each, so it's disappointing when one doesn't work. :-(

I've got the Lt side headlight unit on the kitchen table at the beach house this week and plan on re-taping all the bare wires. I've switched the transformer (on the back of the bulb) and it works in both housings. There is a controller underneath the unit, but I don't know how to test if it's bad or not. I would appreciate any insight into this particular model. Inspection is out of date and won't pass with a malfunctioning headlight.
