.223 Ammo question

Looking to buy some .223 ammo for a friend as a gift. They built an AR and I figured this would be perfect.

I'm noticing a huge range in prices for this size of rounds. Some random cheapo brand might be $4 for a box of 20, while a nicer Remington brand is much more.

Any advice for sourcing something decent for target shooting that an experienced shooter won't balk at?

It really depends on what they bought for a rifle and barrel. Without knowing anything, you should make sure that you buy .223Rem and NOT 5.56mm.
The best place to find ammo to buy: http://gunbot.net/ammo/rifle/223/

The best quality stuff is going to be stuff like Black Hills or Hornady. The best "budget" stuff to buy that gives you the most bang for the buck would be the Federal American Eagle, which is a very consistent and good quality ammo that is properly powered. Be wary of a lot of the imported stuff like PMC due to them having inconsistent pressures that may or may not work with your buddy's gun.

Thanks - what do I need to know about his barrel and rifle? I believe he pieced it together with different brands of anything, and he said it's a 223. That's all I know haha.

The missing barrel info would help to determine whether it's chambered in 5.56 or .223. If you don't know for SURE, stick with .223 because it can be fired in a 5.56 chamber, but you shouldn't fire 5.56 through a rifle chambered in .223. Stick with .223 as stated by Reedo302 and he'll be fine. And very appreciative.

You want to make sure it is not steel ammo.

Stick with normal brands you have heard of or..

Federal
Winchester
Remington
PMC Bronze
Fiocchi
American Eagle

Should be able to buy for $35-55 per 100.
