The reason I thought running is a good core exercise is that every single good runner that I've seen is absolutely ripped. Strong shoulders, six pack. I guess they're supplementing the running with other exercises!

Okay, to try to answer all the questions: I haven't gained weight or anything. In fact I'm pretty thin and always have been. About 6ft 170lbs. But I guess you could say I'm borderline skinny-fat, as in my muscle tone is definitely lacking. I don't belong to a gym and never have, but it might be a good idea to start. One thing for sure is that I have a lot more respect for people who can run a long distance. I have no idea how I did that 6:35 mile. Back then, our P.E. teacher made us run every day and it seems like we were just constantly running. I do remember feeling terrible afterwards.

Sounds like the consensus is having the right shoe is very important, so I'll look into that first. Right now I just have some regular old Pumas which are a casual sneaker and I don't think they are meant to be running shoes. Then again I don't know anything about shoes.

Xcelratr, my back is mostly healed up from that crash, but it's still not right. Unfortunately I don't know if it ever will be, but that's part of the reason I wanted to learn to jog/run because it seems like a real full body workout that will help strengthen my core. Bicycling made my legs really strong, but left everything else the same. I learned that you can bike all you want, but if you want a balanced physique you need to do upper body workouts too.
Those aren't going to cut it...they probably arent giving you any support. Which is causing you to ache and making running even harder.

running it tough....you just have to keep building up your endurance.

3 years ago I ran a marathon....it was my 2 second one...ended up hurting my knee and stopped running for 6 months, never really got back into it and over time just stopped all together except for the occasional weekend basketball game.

I decided I want to run another one and just started running this week. ran 2 miles last night....felt like I was gonna die,lol but it will only get easier if you keep up with it.

are you in socal? if you are go to roadrunner and talk to them. They will video tape you running, watch your form, give you tips and recommend shoes

Yeah the running doesn't do that. Their core training does that. They also look ripped because they're low body fat.

While running is good or your cardiovascular system it's terrible for your knees and joints. I ran in high school 100 years ago and was decent, sub 5 minute mile etc. 17 minute 5k, but my knees are garbage now.

Get in the health and fitness sub forum, start a thread and we can help you out. So much more to do than running, being former runner I hate it and I not do it when I have to.

Exactly, look at pics of marathon runners and those of sprinters. The latter look like beasts. No one wants to look like a long distance runner.

Hahaha

That's the problem. I drive it so much that I don't actually exercise anymore.

That's not what sprinting makes them look like though. That's the point. Distance running is for aerobic exercise. You don't lose your muscle mass just because you're running a long way.

OP you are heel striking which leads to achillies, knee, hip, back problems.

Switch to a mid-foot or forefoot strike and your efficiency will improve

I feel you OP. I started running when I was 25 lost about 90lbs. I had some personal issues that got me out of running and now I am biking to work but I am gaining weight back. I've starting running a bit but its fought to know mentally I used to run 7minute miles and now I'd be lucky to be in the 10's without stopping for a quick breather.

Take it slow and easy. Way to many beginners try to hard to "run", take it slow and easy to start and "jog".

Check out their videos and the book is worth reading too.

It sounds like you're going about your goals all wrong.

Think of what your goals are, then make a thread in the H&F subforum to get some solid advice on what to do. Looking at someone else's physique and thinking that they did xyz to get there isn't a good fitness plan.

Yeah... you're totally right about that.

My motivation for making the thread was that I tried running with my dog and realized how piss poor I am at running. Thinking back, I was never very good, so I want to at least learn the proper form and incorporate it into an actual exercise routine eventually.

oh god. don't listen to barefoot people!

you naturally lose energy, endurance, and fitness as you age. metabolism changes, etc. it just takes longer to get into shape than you used to. you will start slow and not go far, but trust me you can build up to do anything.

i started off at a few miles at a time a few times a week just to try to stay in shape. a few years later that turned into 8 marathons and qualifying and running boston. i know many people who couldn't run around the block and now can do 100 mile ultramarathons.
