Question e46 m3 cpi header+evolve tune question

long time reader first time poster so go easy on me.

So i recently purchased a 2002 e46 m3. Everything is stock except it has active autowerke axle back exhaust. I plan on getting CPI performance headers and an evolve ecu tune. I have a few questions. The first being does anyone know if the CPI headers will mount directly to the stock section one? The second question is would it be better to go ahead and upgrade to either CPI's rasp eliminator pipe with no cats, or upgrade to CPI's section one pipe with cats? I know if i go with the section one pipe with out cats i wont pass an emissions test. So my third and final question is, does anyone know how to beat an emissions test? I live just outside of Boston, MA. Pretty sure ive seen a guy on here that has stated he was from boston. think he drives a silver e46 m3 with the bimmerworld 3.5" race pipe on his car. im assuming he has had to go through emissions so if he can do it im sure i can too. thanks in advance for the replies.

Welcome to E46Fanatics !

Concerning the headers, before you buy anything take a Very good look through the Engine/Performance For Sale sub forum. You just might find what you're looking for.

Good luck & welcome,

I see you've taken my advice, that's the exact one I was thinking of.

Good luck,

Yes Bolts right on a stock section 1

The second question is would it be better to go ahead and upgrade to either CPI's rasp eliminator pipe with no cats, or upgrade to CPI's section one pipe with cats?

That is up to you, a software tune will get rid of the CEL but if your state requires plug in OBD testing for emissions you will never pass. No cats will get you the most power but you will have to deal with emissions issues and exhaust smells. You can get 400 cell race cats prob pass emissions but lose a couple whp. Choice is yours on that one.

I know if i go with the section one pipe with out cats i wont pass an emissions test. So my third and final question is, does anyone know how to beat an emissions test?

Depending on how your state runs emissions, usually if your cool with your shop your mechanic he can get you thru with many tricks that they use.

so after talking with some friends back home (im originally from TN), i think what im going to do is buy the CPI headers along with the catless rasp terminator section one pipe, but also keep my stock exhaust. I only have to test every two years for emissions, so my plan is to either become friends with the guy who runs the testing place or become friends with a guy that has the right tools to just stick the stock exhaust parts back on and then go test. Feel like this is a solid plan because i would really like to go catless.
