PA Soft for 20 Pin E46 versions

I have a question for those e46 owners that have both the 20-pin round OBD connector under the hood and the standard 16-pin connector in the footwell.

Several years ago at Bimmercruise in Toronto I had my e30 with me and the guy parked next to me had a 1999 323 or 328. At that time I used BMW Scanner 1.36 and had it with me on a laptop. The guy with the old e46 asked me to turn off his DRL's. He had both ports (engine & footwell) I recall hooking up to the footwell and accessing the LKM but not being able to read all the modules especially the DME. I can't recall exactly but I think to talk to the DME via BMW Scanner 1.36 I had to use the port in the engine. I used a connector like this image to attach to my regular 1.36 OBD connector.

If I remember correctly BMW Scanner 1.36 would talk to some modules through the engine port and others thru the footwell port.

Does anyone who has both ports in their e46 have a definitive answer for BMW Scanner 1.4.(v9) which is the main version used today. Which modules can be read via which port connector and do you need to use the adapter imaged above. Is there a workaround to this by re-configuring the 16-pin pinouts to use a single connector?

I don't have any personal experience with this, but have seen the pins under the hood jumped for use with a single connector. According to TerraPhantm (here), "If you do this, you can access every module from the OBDII port":

Thanks Silbervogel - that'll work - then just screw the cap back on and forget about that port and you won't need the adapter I inserted in post #41.

Well..

Jumpering the pins as in the above post worked for me. The cap have pins which fit into the socket. I was going to permanently jumper the pins in the cap so when accessing the footwell OBD2 socket, I won't have to play around with the socket under the hood.

I hope that was a helpful explanation.

I believe there are only some DME's that PA Soft can read Live DME data on.

So I would like to know what cars - year, model and DME people are able to get Live DME data for with PA Soft.

As useful as the Live DME data may be using PA Soft, also note that a generic OBDII that supports Live/Realtime data is a far more useful tool than PA Soft for drivability issues. Smart phone/tablet Apps are far more useful for drivability at the end of the day.

I use the same scanner and the same computer to scan my friends car: 2002 X5 3.0i, I got the live data.

I think the facelift (post 2002) E46s has an upgrade ECU version that PA soft doesn't fit this version very well. I believe the software itself is OK, but the difference in cars cause this problem.

I have realized that the DME version of my car is MS45. I think the latest DME version the PA Soft support is MS43, Is anyone figure out how to get the PA Soft done on MS45?

You've been fortunate. When I searched this issue there was a plethora of stories like mine.

Stoopid newbie question here. Is this the software I would use to reprogram things when swapping in a manual for an auto tranny?

Seems I need BMW programs to modify the DME as well. Easy to get and use or dealer only?

I think PA Soft should be able to get all of that done for you.

I guess the P.A Soft has that option, never swapped my transmission so I don't know if you need something else, but there is an option somewhere that you can select auto or manual trans. The DME you can make it with the P.A. Best 50 bucks ever spent on my car.
