2001 330ci no crank no start..

Hello everyone this is my first forum post so bear with me. I bought a 2001 330ci with around 140k on it. Drove it 1000 miles with no issues then on a short ride to a friends i turned off the car, then tried to turn it back on again and nothing. All lights on the dash light up. I will post a video exactly of the issue. I can push and clutch start the car fine. I replaced the starter, checked all the fuses in the e46 no start list of possible causes forum. I checked the 5 under the hood and a bunch from the glovebox. Its a complete no crank so i didnt check any part of the fuel system. Jumping the car does nothing. I would try a different key but i only have one. I don't wanna go to the stealership...

How old is the battery? If you don't have a crank than their might not be enough power going to the starter. Check all the connections if you replaced it yourself. Remember you need 3 things to start a engine. Air, Fuel and Spark. Also has it thrown any codes?

I found out after looking around underneath the car a ground cable on the passenger side was off the post. Odd considering the fastner was on the post but the in tact ground connector was off. A previous owner probably disconnected it and forgot about it and it must of remaines in contact with the post until my late night drive. Was and expensive mess up considering autozone tested my old starter and told me it was bad so i bought and installed a new one. And i bought a code reader. And that starter instal wasn't easy but im glad to have figured it out.

It should not be the key, if the EWS was a problem, then the car should not be able to be roll started.

You indicated you have a clutch/manual trans, so the first 2 things that I would consider would be the clutch safety switch and the ignition switch.

But suggest you verify these do not work before jumping on replacing them.

If you are in a throw parts at the problem mood, I would replace the ignition switch first as they seem to fail more often than the clutch switch.

Early model clutch switches are pretty simple and under the dash, later models are some screwy Hall Effect switch that is somehow ties into the clutch pedal arm that strokes the clutch master cylinder or something screwy like this as I best recall.

I do not see a lot of manual transmission cars where I am due to the fact nobody knows how to use a clutch or wants to drive them in stop and go city or even stop and go highway traffic that we have.

It was a ground connection that wasn't on. I was very confused on how it was working previously but all is well.

If it a happens again, I think it's the key. I had this same problem a few times. The car would no start/crank randomly. I had pvc valves, spark plugs and ignition coils changed. Still would happen after getting it towed three times to the dealer. After everything, they said it was they key. They fixed the board that had been tampered with and advised me to buy a new key. A few days later, no start again so I tapped the key on the arm rest and then the car started. Happened about three more times with start every time I tapped the key. New key was a fix.
