Only the ///M models come with LSDs...the rest get open diffs. However, there are LSDs (aftermarket) available for regular E46s.

Uh... I'm almost certain ALL e46's come with a LSD. Most of the aftermarket ones are open, such as dinan.
Even some of the e36's had a LSD.

There is a way to find out...
Start to peel out, if you see 2 rear tire marks, you have a LSD. If you only see one tire mark you have Non-LSD.

No LSDs for e46 except M3.

It's a bummer.

Sorry my friend... you are incorrect.

Samir/Technik's response was on point though.

Technik is correct, however, e46's (non ///M) use the brakes individually on the rear wheels to arrest and control spin provided you haven't pushed the DSC/ABD button.

If you completely disable the DSC/ABD (3 second push) it is perfectly possible to peg-leg a launch (one wheel spinning).

Technik, I have been looking for an aftermarket torsen differential, are there any available yet? I was under the impression there were not.

Oh well, I always thought it was a LSD. Just another excuse to peel out.

How good is the DSC etc at compensating for not having LSD.. ?

I know it isn't going to be anywhere near as good but, in terms of reducing damage to the rear for example when accelerating hard from stationary round a corner ?

Thanks,
Stuart.

DSC/ADB is actually fairly good at keeping the tires from spinning on launches, even around corners. With all the idiot controls on, you would be hard pressed to spin your car out on a launch.

It is not, however, performance oriented. That is my complaint against it. For DSC/ADB to work it has to use your brakes and/or cut your throttle, which obviously hurts acceleration. It's another thing to interject between the driver and the road that isn't completely predictable.

FYI on a torsen differential

A torsen type differential is available for the 323/328 e46's but has not yet been either adapted or certified to work on 325/330's
(I don't see why it wouldn't, but I'm not gonna try until I know)

see the attached e-mail
--------

Yes there will be an application for the 330i. Will let you know when it is available.

Thanks
Tom
