When I went shopping for my 330 cabrio, I brought several audio CD-R and CD-RW discs to the dealership to try in different cars. This is what I found the 3-series Business CD Head Units could play:

* 2001 HUs could play the CD-R, but not the CD-RW.
* 2002 HUs could play both the CD-R and CD-RW.
* 2003 HUs could play both the CD-R and CD-RW.

Note: I brought three types of CD-R (Sony, Memorex, and "Great Quality") and two types of CD-RW (Memorex and "Great Quality").

I bought a '02 330 cabrio.

Yup. One of the CD-Rs was even 89 minutes long (played in all 3).

must be my problem. I am using the ones that I purchase to burn on the computer and I know they have 2 lengths. 74min and 80. So maybe that is why the car did not read it.

thanks for your help

You are correct, CDs come in two "sizes" 74min/650MB and 80min/700MB. I used 80min/700 variety for all tests.

You can "overburn" these to fit more than the label states, but when you do so you risk that certain players will not be able to read the CDs. In my case, I made one CD-R fit 89 minutes worth of music (9 minutes more than it should hold) to test if the HU could play the overburned CDs. They did play them... and I was surprised.

Again, the only thing that I noticed is that the 2001 HU could not play CD-RW discs. The later models could. You should be able to play your CDs (assuming that they aren't CD-RWs in a 2001 model HU).
