Rear Electric Sunshade

Has anyone does this in a DIY yet i am thinking of trying to order the parts tomorrow and doing it myself. The manual shows a 3.5 install time which is not bad at all. Here is the part#'s and manual i came across for the install

I've retrofitted a rear sunshade, but not the electric version. The labor is essentially the same:

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45744

There are three different sunshade types - one manual and two electric. All require the complete removal of the rear upholstery. It wasn't difficult, just time consuming.

Fitting the factory electric shade requires you to saw a slot (Sawzall, etc) in the rear shelf, as the shade rolls up underneath it. You also need to remove the door trim to fish the harness. See if you can get the factory PDF with photos from Circle to get a better idea of what is involved.

The retrofit electric and manual shades sit on top of the shelf (in a thin metal housing) and do not require cutting. The reftofit electric is nearly identical to the manual, but it comes with a cheesy keyfob remote control to operate it instead of a dash mounted switch.

No offense, but you may want to double the install time if you are not a factory tech. I'm pretty handy and it took me quite a bit longer than the quoted labor time. Then again, maybe I'm just slow and methodical because it's my car :-)

If you have a facelifted car, I dont think the sunshade switch will fit in the center console, I believe it only fits the earlier consoles (the type that have removable knockouts for the switches).

Here is the official retrofit instructions from BMW for a e46. I can't attach pdfs on this forum so you'll have to go to bimmerfest.com:

Pacific BMW, and if you have a CCA membership, it's only $90. I don't have the part number handy, but they'll know it.

It's different for coupes and sedans, BTW.
