Question Kenwood Excelon DDX7015 Double Din

I have wanted to upgrade my reciever for a while now, but I always hated the fact that the screens block the vents (like most I am sure). I have seen the custom jobs for putting the screen in the dash which are pretty nice but I still would rather have something look more like the stock nav system. Well I saw something today that might work out great, but I wanted to know if anyone had experience with it, the part number didnt come up in the search at all. What do you guys think?

http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...=0&cc=01&avf=N

Also can I still use my steering wheel controls with this?

I think it would look pretty good. You might have to make your own kit and bracket but it would be well worth it. I'd suggest flush mounting it and then making some type of false cover you can put over the screen when you park so no one will be tempted to steal it. Its pretty big and obvious so if its out of sight, out of mind.

I don't think it will fit. From what I read, there is not much room behind the A/C controls.

It will fit with major surgery to the AC ducts behind the climate controls, most likely compromising functionality of AC system, since ducts will need to be disabled or rebuilt. I would not recommend it.

yes it fits. it's been done. no need to modify anything. just need to build the dash kit.

SAM001, are you saying that you're putting together a dash kit for the Kenwood DDX7015?

There's not a lot of room behind the AC controls, how did you manage to get the thing in there without removing or cutting into the ducting for the footwells?

If you've managed that somehow, that'd be great! I love the way the DDX7015 looks, and the pic above is the best install I've seen yet!

does anybody have a profile picture of the unit? The only way I can imagine it fitting is if was single din sized on the top so it would fit like any other radio and low profile on the bottom (as in, less than 1.5" deep)

i should clarify that this isn't my car. i recently sold my is300 to get an m3 and was in the process of selling my ddx7015 when someone told me not to because there was no need to modify anything to get it to dit nicely in the m3.

apparently there is misinformation all over this board about the double din fitment in m3's. the only thing complicated about installing this deck is the custom dash kit. other than that the installer told me there is nothing that needs to be modified.

That looks bad @$$

Much props on that install. It really is the best one i've seen so far. Well at least until I finish mine, lol. Any pics of the actual install, or what materials you used to make the trim?

And to the person with the m3, there are modifications you have to make to get that screen to fit. I haven't had much time to work on my car recently, but i've done the first part which is the duct work behind the A/C controls. Your A/C ducts have to be modified in order for this unit to fit, unless you want the unit to stick out about 2", then it's not worth doing a double-din install. Once your installer gets the dash apart, he'll know exactly what i'm talking about. Don't get me wrong, It Can Be Done, it just takes time, and the final result should be awesome. I'm hopefully going to start working on my car Tuesday, that is if my tv tuner comes in and I should have the rest of it done by then (building trim, running wires to trunk for nav. and future amps).

wow

that is the best install of a double DIN setup in any E46 I've seen but.....

I don't believe it when he says no mod to the vents needed!

Anyone post a pic of the Kenwood deck from the rear profile?

Unless that deck has a notch cutout, there is NO WAY that will fit into the E46 dash without modifying the vents! Anyone of you who has removed the E46 dash / climate control will know what I'm talking about.

Roughly 4" into the dash on the climate control back, there is a solid plastic duct that runs the length of the opening. No DIN sized unit will fit in that section without cutting! Otherwise you think others would not have done this "easy" mod already????

Finally installed the kenwood ddx7015!!! Awsome!!!! tough job for the air vents in the back of the dash. Had to cut out the hvac box and adapt it. Get some pics soon. BTW is there any way of changing the background in the ddx to a custom pic???

Just got my DDX7015 unit, heading off to installer's today. They swear up and down they can do it and make it look as good or better than the pic above and that they've done AC vent remolding and rerouting before.

I'll post pics when they get done. I hope they aren't yanking my chain!
